Read More	Died, June 1st, at his residence, “Riverside,” Augusta county, Va., Samuel Brown Finley, in the 69th year of his age. Mr. Finley was a native of this county, though his father had moved here in early life from Pennsylvania. The family were of Scotch Irish stock, and were noted for strength of mind and fixedness of purpose, and both in the West and North have given men of usefulness and distinction to the country— possibly the most celebrated of whom was Professor Morse. The subject of this notice was no exception to the rule. In early life he traveled over a large portion of the West and South, and took in those extended ideas of progressive and scientific agriculture, which he lived to put into practical use ; and a general knowledge of the world and particular re membrance of the “flush times” in the South, that ever after gave point and illustration to his conversation He began business as a merchant in Lexington, Va., where he was succeeding, when he married the daughter of Col. Samuel McClung, of Greenbrier, and shortly thereafter, settled upon the fine estate, where he spent the rest of his life, in the quiet and peaceful avocation of a country gentleman, of the olden time; the friend of the poor, a kind master, and much “given to hospitality ’’ As an agriculturist he had few equals in his State, and combining the elements of improvement of his land, return for his outlay and pleasure from his employment, certainly no superior. He was an active life member and for some time a director in the State Agricultural Society, and one of the original directors of his County Fair. In the better days of the Republic, he sat upon the bench as a magistrate, and commanded the respect and confidence of a court and bar that knew no superiors in the State. In politics he was an unswerving Whig of the Henry Clay school, in favor of union until all hope of peace had vanished with Lincoln’s proclamation, and then a staunch supporter of the war. Ill-health rendered him unfit for general military duty, but as a Captain in the Home Guard of his county, his purse and his sword were ready at every call of his country—and no soldier was ever turned unaided from his door. In all the relations of neighbor, friend, father, and husband—his death leaves a void not easily filled. His remains were attended by a large concourse of neighbors and friends. His remains were carried to the old Stone Church where they were buried; in the confident expectation of those who saw him in his last illness, of a glorious resurrection.
