Samuel Cain, son of Mr. and Mrs. Barbara Cain, was born in Bedford county, Pa., August 18, 1818. He had been for the past two years the only survivor of a family of 12 children. When Mr. Cain was but three years of age his father died. His mother lived to the ripe old age of 84 years, remaining the latter years of her life with him, and dying at his home in Orange. In 1839, he married Elizabeth Cobaugh in Cambria county, Pa. To them 12 children were born, six of whom are now living. They are: Mrs. Barbara Strayer, Mrs. Lucinda Wassam, Mrs. Matilda Dierdorff, Mrs. Mattie Klingaman, Mrs. Jennie Iseminger, all of near Hudson, and Mrs. Wm Lichty of Sabetha, Kansas. Those who preceded their father to the promised land were: Mrs. Susannah Strayer, Mrs. Elizabeth Shank, William, Frederick, Albert, and Lydia. On January 8, 1864, death deprived Mr. Cain of his first wife, and in the latter part of the same year he married Mrs. Rebecca Dietz, who brought into the family three children, Martin, Mary, and Martha, the latter of whom died in her eighteenth year. To them were born six children, all of whom are living. They are: E.E. Cain and S.E. Cain, members of the hardware firm of Cain Bros. & Co., of this place, Mrs. Ada Petrie, Mrs. Eva Washburn, J.A. Cain, now a jeweler in Estherville, and R.B. Cain, attending the Highland Park Normal school at Des Moines. In October of 1865, with his family he moved to Blackhawk county, settling on what is now known as the Cain farm at Orange Grove, about midway between Hudson and Waterloo. His first purchase was 160 acres of land. To this he kept adding until he had a fine farm of 320 acres, well improved, besides several hundred acres north and west of Hudson, some 1,200 acres in all. At the time of his death he still owned 640 acres, besides a considerable amount of town property. It was in the establishment of Hudson that he figured most largely. Both business men and residents were induced to locate in Hudson by Mr. Cain's erecting buildings for them to occupy, and at the time of his death he owned a considerable number of residence properties besides the store rooms occupied by J.A. Strayer, Cain Bros. & Co., one of the W.D. Strayer store rooms and a half interest in the other. He was also interested in the firm of Cain Bros. & Co., of which his two sons, E.E. Cain and S.E. Cain were the Cain Bros., and this firm was always one of the most patriotic and progressive firms of Hudson. In politics Mr. Cain was a staunch republican. He held the offices of supervisor and trustee while in Orange township, besides a number of other of lesser importance. In his religious views he formerly favored the German Baptist sect, but when the division was made he went with the Progressive Brethren, and has always been one of the pillars of the church at this place.
