The funeral of Samuel Cates was conducted from the residence of his son, James Cates, in Civil Bend township, Monday, January 18th at 10 a.m., Rev. J.M. Hupp officiating. The funeral was largely attended. The M.W.A. lodge of Jefferson, of which some of his sons are members, contributed a beautiful wreath of cut flowers. The funeral of Samuel Cates was conducted from the residence of his son, James Cates, in Civil Bend township, Monday, January 18th at 10 a.m., Rev. J.M. Hupp officiating. The funeral was largely attended. The M.W.A. lodge of Jefferson, of which some of his sons are members, contributed a beautiful wreath of cut flowers. Deceased was born in Hopkins County, Kentucky, August 5th, 1820. He was married to Sidney V. Cobb, Sept. 22, 1846. To this union was born ten children, seven sons and three daughters. Four are dead. The living are S.C. of Tacoma, Washington; John and James of Civil Bend; Thomas of Jefferson; Allen of Elk Point, and Mrs. C.L. Beaver of Civil Bend. He also leaves twenty-three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Mr. Cates removed from Kentucky to Delaware county, Iowa in February 1848, returning to Kentucky in March 1850. In 1853 he removed to Cooper county, MO and during the same year removed to Linn county, Iowa, where they resided until the summer of 1856. Thence he moved to Cass county, Missouri and later to Jackson county where they remained about one year. Again removing to Linn county, Iowa, thence to Benton county, and in October 1870 he came to Union county, S.D. where they have since resided. In his early life his health was poor, hence the removal from place to place. He was sick one week, dying of pneumonia Saturday at 10 p.m., in his 84th year. He leaves a loving wife four years his junior. There passes from the scenes of this life, a respected citizen, and an esteemed neighbor.
