[Who's Who in Nebraska, 1940: Chase County] Last Rites for Samuel C. Hammer Friday Samuel Christian Hammer was born at Pekin, Illinois, December 28, 1849 and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. W. Pugh in Imperial, Tuesday, April 22, 1941 at the age of 91 years, 3 months and 24 days. September 8, 1875 he was married to Phila Teda Marshall of Manito, Illinois and the following nine years they lived in the familiar haunts of youth. Full of energy when the tide of emigration was heavily westward they came to Utica, Nebraska in Seward county in 1884 and five years later to Chase county, settling six miles northeast of Imperial where the family was reared. Following the death of Mrs. Hammer in 1909, Mr. Hammer spent three years in Montana. Excepting this brief sojourn he has been a resident of Nebraska since 1884 and of Chase county since 1889. For the past two years he has made his home with his son in law and daughter, Mr. And Mrs. J. W. Pugh. He was the father of seven children. Edward died in childhood, Eunice is Mrs. J. W. Pugh, of Imperial; Eugene, deceased; Ruth, Mrs. B. M. Munyon of Fort Des Moines, Iowa; Paul, dying in infancy; Sadie, Mrs. D. E. Jewell, Des Moines, Iowa; Russell, Aurora, Illinois. Among other relatives are 19 grandchildren and 15 greatgrandchildren. Also two sisters, Mrs. Ella Smith of Manito, Illinois and Mrs. Fannie Greer, Laomi, Illinois. Mr. Hammer was and old and enthusiastic member of the I. O. O. F. and is numbered among the charter members of the Imperial order, perhaps the last active member living. For a number of years he has been a near invalid resulting from a paralytic attack. Since then the community has had a fine example of patience and uncomplaining endurance on his part and of loving unselfish service on the part of his daughter, who has been his companion and caretaker until he took his quiet leave without any unusual physical indication of the approach of death. In these days of speed and strenuous endeavor it is refreshing to remember a long life free from destructive habits, kindly attitudes toward his fellowman and a spirit unembittered by any misfortunes suffered in the passing years. He lived peacefully enduring patient[ly]. [It] is therefore superfluous to add that a large circle of friends will remember him affectionately. Funeral services were held on Friday, April 25, 1941, at the Luhrs Funeral Home. Rev Wine preached the sermon. The local I. O. O. F. Lodge, No. 203 had charge at the cemetery. [Newspaper clipping]
