Read More	May the 24, 1864 Morgans Bend, LA Dear Mary i seat my self to write you a few lines to let you know that i am well and hope you are the same. i received a letter from you day before yesterday that was wrote the 1 of april. it was along time comming. i was sorry to here that you and the children was sick. i feel very ancious to here from you. it has been a long time since i have had a chance to write before our communication has been cut of [off] on the red river. for about three weeks we had a good deal of mail lost by the Rebels. they took two of our transports with the mail. i expect that i had some in them. we have had some hard fighting to get down red river. i hardly know what to write. i wrote all the news when we was in alexandria. i do not know how much of it you have got. we joind the regt the first day of this month. we have been fighting every few days since we came back. we have marched over a thousand miles since we left franklin. there is about three hundred of us left yet but we are poor ragged and loussey. when we left franklin i wighed 168 lbs. yesterday i waid 140. we have been through enough to kill any man. i have seene the time that i would give a dollar for what i could eat out of our swill pail but i will not try to discribe it. if you knew what i have suffered you would not take much comfort. but they say our march is over for this summer but i am afraid it is not. we are in camp on the bank of the missippia river just below the mouth of red river with orders to be readdy to moove at an hours notice. we expect to take transports for port hudson or new orleans and there go into summer quarters. that is what they tell us. the weather is so hot that we cannot march much. we have had a number of men sun struck the past week. i have stood it well so far but if i was at home gain they could not higher me to inlist. i would not be hired to go through what i have again. Since i left franklin for all that i git for three years. i have wrote once before today with a led pensil and i got some ink and thought i would write again. i have sent you 75 dollars 35 by express and they say forty dollars has been allotted to you. write as soone as you can and let me know if you get it. i want to here from you verry much. it will not take so long to get letters back and fourth as it has. i shall write to you as soon as we get into quarters. tell the children that i want to see them all. write how you get along with the springs work and how the horse and cattle get along. tell tyler John Sates [John Scates] and Ed Celley [Edwin Kelley] are both priserners. i cannot write enny more this time so good bye for this time. there has not beenn enny rain here for two months.
