At the time of his death in Waverly, Iowa, May 27, 1904, he was in his sixty-seventh year. When he was but a young man, the family moved west settling in Fayette County, Iowa. Mr. Beck early in his life firmly purposed to secure for himself a thorough education. In keeping with his design he took advantage of the public school and later became a student in the Upper Iowa University at Fayette. He responded to the country's call for soldiers and leaving the college, enlisted as a private in Company C, 12th Iowa Infantry. For three years he faced the danger and endured the severe hardship of modern warfare. As a prisoner he spent seven months in the Libby and Andersonville prisons of the confederacy. At the expiration of a term of three years service he was discharged on account of broken health. For awhile his family and friends despaired of his life. Through the patient and unselfish efforts of loved ones and friends he was nursed back to health. On the eleventh of May 1871 he was united in marriage to Mary Hirsh, of Waverly, by Rev. R. D. Parsons. Mr. and Mrs. Beck spent the first years of their married life on a farm in Fayette County. To them were born seven children. Of these Dorr A., Cyrus, Bertram, and Elsie Beck and Mrs. Myrtie Patchin, with the mother are left to mourn. Nineteen years ago Mr. and Mrs. Beck moved to Waverly where they have continuously resided since. Mr. Beck was converted at the age of seventeen years, and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church. For fifty years he had a home in the church. He faithfully and conscientiously kept the church vows. The funeral was held from his late residence Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Frank Cole, assisted by Rev. W. Ward Smith. A large company of relatives and friends followed his body to Harlington cemetery, where it was laid away.
