He was born in Milltown (Charlotte Co.) N.B., Nov. 2, 1805 and lived there for the greater part of his life. He was in the lumber business and at one time was the largest manufacturer in the St. Croix Valley, being associated with Hon. Wm TODD. Mr. Darling was trustee of the St. Stephen Academy. Several years ago he removed from Milltown to the States owing to the death of his wife and daughter. Death was caused by old age. The funeral is to take place Wednesday afternoon at St. Stephen. (St. John Globe, April 1, 1895) Concerning the death of James D. WHITE, the Gardiner, Me., correspondent of the St. Croix 'News' remarks: Among those who were best known was James D. White who had been doing business here since 1848. He died suddenly 20th inst. of pneumonia. He has had many responsible offices conferred on him by his townsmen. His wife, formerly, Miss Emma DARLING, St. Stephen (Charlotte Co.) who has been an invalid for many years, is prostrated with grief. The fact that he aged father and only son, her first born, could not be present to share her grief, adds to her sorrows. Both were in Boston. The father is suffering from a severe cold and the son's wife is critically ill from the effects of a fall. (St. Andrews Beacon, February 1, 1893) Samuel DARLING, Esq., formerly of St. Stephen, N.B. received many friends at the residence of his daughter, yesterday, the occasion being the anniversary of his 87th birthday. - Gardiner, Me. notes in 'Kennebec Journal'. (St. Croix Courier, November 10, 1892) Rev. Walter Enoch DARLING, Maine, died at the Sanitarium, Arlington, Mass., Sept. 16, age 55. He graduated at Bowdoin College in 1857 and at Bangor Theological Seminary in 1860. He supplied in Princeton, Me. a few months in 1861 and again in 1865; was ordained pastor of the Congregational church of Foxcroft and Dover May 10, '63 remaining until June 24, '65, and after a few months at Orland he went to Kennebunk in January 1866 and was installed as pastor of the Union Evangelical church on March 26, '66 remaining until Nov. 9, '72. From Nov. '77 until 1889 he was pastor at Farmington, N.H. He was married in 1862 to a daughter of Rev. George SHEPERD, D.D. who survives him. Their only child died several years ago. Deceased was a son of Samuel DARLINGH, Esq. of Milltown. (St. Croix Courier, October 2, 1890) The funeral of Mrs. Alice JORDAN took place from the residence of Samuel DARLING Sabbath afternoon 3 o'clock. Rev. C.G. McCully conducted the services. Of the family there was present, Rev. W.E. DARLING of Farmington, Maine; Mrs. WHITE of Gardiner, Me. and S.E. DARLING and wife of Somerville, Mass. Mr. Darling, sr, remained at his son's house in Somerville. His family did not deem it prudent for him to undertake the journey and undergo the unbearable strain of seeing her. The deceased was 54 years of age. She had been a zealous worker in the Sabbath School and a member of Congregation Church from youth. (St. Andrews Bay Pilot, July 12, 1888) d. (St. Croix Courier, July 12, 1888) Samuel DARLING, Esq., in consequence of advanced age and infirmity, has retired from the Customs House at Milltown (Charlotte Co.) on annuity. (Bay Pilot, December 6, 1883) In the 1881 Canada Census, custom house officer Samuel Darling, 75, born N.B., was living in Milltown, N.B. with Alice J., 70, born U.S.; and widow Alice Johnson, 47, born U.S. Hon. Timothy DARLING, native of Milltown (Charlotte Co.) N.B., but who soon after removed to Calais (Maine) where he resided until 30 years of age, has just died at Nassau. He was appointed to the U.S. Consul at the latter place in 1842. Deceased leaves a wife and seven children. One of his sons is a well known preacher in Schenectady, N.Y. His wife is a daughter of the late John SARGENT of Sullivan, Maine. Of the immediate family of Mr. Darling, none remain but an elder brother, Samuel DARLING, Esq., Milltown, St. Stephen.(The Daily Telegraph, November 26, 1880) S.C. Census, merchant Samuel Darling Jr.45, born N.B., was living in St. Stephen Parish with Alice J., 40; Mary A., 18; Walter E., 16; twins Georgianna and George E., 12; Samuel, 8; and Emma J., 6, all born in N.B.; and lodger Ann Stewart, 20. Samuel was the son of Samuel Darling and Jane Vance.
