He was a boy of ten when his father moved into Dane County, in what was then Wisconsin Territory, and settled seven miles north of Madison, entering a half-section of land, which he farmed until 1853, when he moved into Mitchell County, Northern Iowa. His father, Abner T Cady died when Samuel was in his twenty-first year, he was the oldest boy at home, and upon him devolved the care of the family. This was no light task for a young man; their location was near the Missouri line, and the border troubles in 1858 rendered their position dangerous, as they were between the Pro-slavery and Free State Parties. In May 1858, young Cady, along with twelve others, was taken prisoner by about thirty pro-slavery men from Missouri, under one Charles Hamilton, and led out to be shot down as free-state-men. In this massacre, known as the "Marais des Cygnes Murder," five wounded, and all were supposed to be dead, Mr. Cady being one of those who escaped. For that summer he kept the only store at the "trading post", where his mother's family lived -- the owner, who was shot by the Hamilton party, having requested him to take charge of the business. In the fall, he engaged to work in a saw mill at that place, and remained there about two years. In 1860, he married Frances A. Lane, a young lady of Linn County, whose parents lived there.
