PECK It is with mental pain and sorry that I write of the life and times of this old pioneer and distinguished citizen of this county, whose death occurred at his home in Mallory township, Sunday, the 9th instant. Mr. Peck was born in West Bloomfield, Ontario county, June 29th, 1819. At the age of 18 he struck out for the west and landed in Clayton county in 1836, where he has since resided. Another brother had preceded him and made a claim on the bottom where the little village of Osterdock now stands. Soon after Samuel came, the little brother died and Samuel took possession; and here, alone and surrounded by Indians, this young man still in his teens, batched it in his cabin, cleared up a large tract of rich land, built a ferry boat, and his place was long known as Peck's Ferry. By diligence and hard labor he soon acquired quite a large property, and lived in his cabin like a prince. He was the prince of hunters, and the best off-hand shot in the whole territory; and during his residence at the ferry, game of all kinds was plenty, and he has often killed as high as twelve deer in a single day, and he was the only hunter west of the great river who was ever known to have killed three deer at a single shot. For many years he supplied the Dubuque market with fresh venison, wild turkeys and bear meat, and from this source he derived quite an annual revenue. At one time the Indians took one of his deer, that he had hung up in the woods, but he soon found it out, and seizing his rifle followed the trail, overtook them and compelled them to return it again to his cabin, and always afterward they let him alone. He was known among them as the fast runner and the sharp shooter, and they were careful about molesting or offending him. He was a natural born woodsman, never lost, and he could creep on to a wild animal with the stillness of a cat, no matter what the condition of the weather or the ground might be. To show his skill in hiding, the author of this has seen him take a valuable rifle, when snow was on the ground, then disappear in the brush, and in half an hour come in, in a different direction from where he started, and then offer the rifle to any one as a gift, who could take his track and find it, and trained trackers took him at his word, tried it and failed. He has hunted in the cross timbers of Texas, the everglades of Florida and killed bear and deer in the Lake Superior timber, and except on one occasion, when the author of this was with him on the head waters of the Wisconsin, fifty miles from any settlement, he always went alone, and camped wherever night overtook him. Fear he had none, and he would take a bear's track in a dense forest, follow it, camp on it for the night, take it the next day and finally kill it, and come into camp looking as fresh and agile as when he started out. Time and long and exciting chases began to tell upon him, and he became rheumatic, pains and aches followed, and for the last ten years of his life he was an invalid. He sold his farm at the ferry, bought another near Colesburg, built a fine brick mansion upon it, improved the land, and here for many years he lived in comfort, surrounded by every luxury that heart could wish. In early life he married Miss Nancy Moreland, a daughter of Jacob Moreland, Sr., one of the oldest settlers of Delaware county, and she survives him. This selection of a wife proved a happy one for Mr. Peck, for she made him an excellent, kind and loving wife, and he has taken care in his will to provide for her future welfare. Together they have raised up a responsible family of sons and daughters, who are all at the mature age well provided for, and are doing well. In this happy home this good man lived beyond the divine lease of three score and ten, beloved and respected by all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance.
