Brandenberg, 46, was found dead, seated in his automobile at the back of his home at 5 o'clock Tuesday morning, by his wife. He had arrived home in the early morning, and evidently suffered a heart attack as he was about to leave the car. Arising early Mrs. Brandenberg noticed the car parked in an unusual spot and investigated. As she opened the door smoke issued, and she quickly pulled her husband from the seat. As she did so the inside of the car burst into flame. Help was called and the fire quickly extniguished. Mr. Brandenberg was pronounced dead, from heart attack, induced possibly by suffication from a smoldering fire. His back and hips were quite badly burned. It is thought that a match or cigarette caused the cushions of the car or his clothing to ignite. The family were all packed up ready to move to a neary location on the day that he died. The deceased was a well known truck man and had lived in Rensselaer many years. He was the father-in-law of the youngest sister of Mrs. Phyl Miller of this place. Born May 25, 1880, at Earl Park, he was a son of George and Alice (Lord) Brandenburg. Besides his widow, he leaves two sons, Goerge and Roy, both of Rensselaer; and the following brothers and sisters; James, Laura, Mrs. Rose Tigler and Mrs. Maggie Walters, all of Monon; Mrs. Nellie Baker, Monticello, and Mrs. Mary Robertson, Havana, Ill. The funeral was held at the Christian church, by Rev. Doyle Mullen; burial in Francisville cemetery. -------------- obituary on wife Edith Rensselaer Republican Mon., 9 Apr 1990 Edith Gallagher Edith Gallagher, 98, of 848 Matheson St., Rensselaer died at the Rensselaer Care Center at 12:01 a.m. April 8, after a period of declining health. She was born in Barkley Township on June 20, 1891 to Fred and Sophia (Kupe) Saltwell, who are both deceased. She was a lifetime resident of Jasper County and married Samuel E. Brandenberg in Rensselaer and he died in 1936. She married Harry Gallagher on Feb. 15, 1939 in Rensselaer and he died in 1949 Educated in the Jasper County Public Schools, she was a cook for the Rensselaer School Corportaion for 18 years and also cooked for the Rensselaer Rotary Club for many years, retiring in 1984 at the age of 92. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Rensselaer and the Revekah Lodge of Rensselaer. Surviving are two daughter-in-laws, Doris and Kate Brandenburg, both of Rensselaer, two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her step-daughter, Gladys Gallagher Staffenburgh of St. Paul, Min., two sons, four sisters, four brothers, and one great-great-grandchild. Friends may call at the Steinke Funeral Home of Rensselar From 4-8 p.m. April 10. Funeral services will take place at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. April 22 with the Rev. Woody Slade officiating. Burial wil follow in Weston Cemetery.
