He was born July 11, 1805 at Tulpehocken, Lebanon Co., PA. His wife, Elizabeth (Wetterhold) Martin, daughter of George and Christina (Noecker) Wetterhold, was born January 28, 1809. Samuel Martin and Elizabeth Wetterhold, his first wife, were married May 10, 1828, by the Rev.Thomas Lienbach, in Jackson twp., Lebanon Co., PA. Eleven children were born of this union, as follows: Israel W., deceased,was a physician John H. (Mrs. Erbaugh)of Dayton,OH Mary A., Deceased William W. born October 29, 1838, of Dayton, OH, Lydia R., (Mrs.Jenkins) of North Dakota, Elizabeth (Mrs. Samuel Couffer), Charles W., of Cando, ND. Ruth, deceased, Hiram, deceased. Samuel Martin and Elizabeth, shortly after their marriage,removed to Hummelstown, PA, where Mr. Martin worked at his two trades, plastering in summer and coopering in winter. Mrs. Samuel Martin died January 10, 1849, and was buried at Hummelstown, PA. He married for his second wife Nancy Grundon, who bore him three sons: Jacob, deceased; Philip and David, now of Erwin twp., IN. At the close of the civil war Mr. Martin removed to Erwin twp., Howard Co., IN. Samuel Martin died December 18, 1871. His widow, Nancy (Grundon) Martin, died a few years ago, and the remains of both she and her husband lie in Union cemetery, Erwin twp., Indiana."
