Dixon for some forty years past, one of Piedmont’s most prominent business men and a highly respected citizen of the whole community, died in Baltimore City Tuesday afternoon of this week, June 8, 1909, aged 64 years, and was buried here among us yesterday, Thursday. In almost every department of life Mr. Dixon was conspicuous among us for energy and enterprise, after having been called upon by his fellow citizens to represent them in business and civic life where his progressive spirit always gave him an opportunity to be of benefit to his community and his people. This was particularly so in his membership of the town council of both Piedmont and Westernport. Mr. Dixon was born in Carroll County, Maryland, and came to this neighborhood about forty years ago. For the better part of the time he resided in Westernport, but his business interests were almost wholly in Piedmont, where by close application to the needs of his surroundings he had built up one of the largest and most prosperous concerns in this whole section. For a short time just after the removal of the B. & O. R. R. terminus to Keyser he was engaged in store keeping at that place, but returned to Piedmont when he aw that the future of the Twin-Towns was not to be jeopardized by that action of the company. Mr. Dixon was twice married, his wives being sisters, the Misses Gregg, of Garrett County, Maryland, the latter of whom survives to mourn his untimely death, together with the following children: Mr. Howard Dixon, Mrs. _ Grant Hayde, Mr. George Dixon, Mr. Frank Dixon, Miss Nannie Dixon, Master Samuel and Marshall. The deceased has not been in good health for several years, but no one anticipated the serious trouble that developed in the last two or three months. Recently he went west as far as Arizona in search of rest and general health, but returned after a short visit there. It was thought best about twelve days ago to go to Baltimore for consultation and examination, when it was discovered that cancer of the stomach had developed so rapidly that there was but little hope for better conditions. But even then it was not expected that the dread hour of death was so near. Kind friends and loving relatives did all that could be done to ease the last moments, and death came quietly and peacefully about half past two o’clock Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Howard Dixon, eldest son, had been with the father in Baltimore the day before, and at the time of his death. Mrs. Dixon and all of the children, except the two younger were there. The funeral took place Thursday afternoon from the First M. E. Church, Rev. W. D. Perry, pastor of the church officiating, and was very largely attended. The pallbearers were: Honorary – Dr. Z. T. Kalbaugh. Dr. W. A. Suter, U. B. McCandish. W. C. Johnson, Frank Burnworth, of this place, and E. S. Richardson, of Baltimore. Active: J. A. Suter. R. H. Drane, Tom F. Kenny, George R. Boyles, H. B. Carroll and F. W. Rose. Among those who attended the funeral from out of town were three brothers of the deceased: Mr. James Dixon, two daughters and a son, of Grafton; Mr. Silas Dixon and daughter, of Martinsburg; Mr. Augustus Dixon and son, Dr. Edward Dixon, of Mattoon, Illinois. Also attending were Mr. Edwin Dixon of Cumberland; Mr. and Mrs. George W. Dixon and son, of Keyser; Mrs. Mary Harley, of Martinsburg and Mrs. Charles Burk and daughter, of Cumberland. The floral tributes were very beautiful and were presented by the following; Messrs. Greif Bros, of Baltimore, a very large pillow of pink roses and carnations; Mr. and Mrs. Richardson, of Baltimore, a wreath; Mr. Allan Luke, bouquet of red roses; Dr. and Mrs. Z. T. Kalbaugh, lilies; the family a very large bunch of roses and another of carnations; Earl Combs, bouquet of roses; Dr. A. B. and Miss Margaret Kalbaugh, pink carnations; Mrs. Amy Kight, roses and Mrs. Benton Broadwater, carnations. Out of respect to the deceased nearly all the stores and business houses in the Tri-Towns were closed.
