Description	:	Ashley, ND-Funeral Service for Samuel “Sam” Geist, 89, of Ashley will be 2:30 pm, Saturday, August 15, 2020 at Zion Lutheran Church in Ashley. Rev. David Irwin will officiate. The service will be live streamed and available at www.Carlsenfh.com under Sam’s obituary. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery with military graveside rites. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Sam died August 5, 2020 at Ashley Nursing Home. Samuel was born August 2, 1931 to Jacob and Mary (Jundt) Geist near Hosmer, SD. He attended country school and worked on the family farm. He entered the United States Army during the Korean Conflict serving from May 1952 to June 1954 when he was honorably discharged. He was united in marriage to Marion Jenner on August 23, 1955 in Zion Lutheran Church at Ashley, ND. He worked for Salzer Plumbing for many years. He and Marion purchased a farm west of Ashley and farmed retiring in 1972. Sam then went to work for the City of Ashley as Street Commissioner for a few years, then at Ashley Medical Center as Plant Engineer in the late 1970’s, working there for over 30 years. While at Ashley Medical Center, he was also the maintenance man for Ashley Housing Authority. Sam loved hunting and fishing in his early years. He liked a good game of Canasta and enjoyed gardening and yard work. Sam loved visiting with people and in return they enjoyed his smile and conversation. He and Marion served as surrogate grandparents for many kids in Ashley and will never be forgotten for their kindness. Sam was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and had been a former church council member. He had been very active with Frank Piper American Legion Post #53, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ashley Fire Department. Grateful for having shared Sam’s life are his sister, Irene Pietz of Hosmer, SD; brother, Johnny Geist of Alamogordo, NM and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Marion (7-28-2012), two brothers, Otto and Markus and one sister, Leah Knapp. Carlsen Funeral Home of Ashley has been entrusted with arrangements.
