Due to his death certificate and obituary having him buried at Monroe City Cemetery, a merge was requested of the two memorials even though there is no marker at Monroe City (Suncrest). Due to his death certificate and obituary having him buried at Monroe City Cemetery, a merge was requested of the two memorials even though there is no marker at Monroe City (Suncrest). Research has been conducted and includes that of the City Engineering department checking with the State Archives and the local Health Department to see if either had a record of a re-interment (they did not). Maplewood was called and there was no record of him being buried or re-interred there. They only have a record for his wife, Mattie. Gordon's Funeral Home was contacted (they took over Harris-Wells Funeral Home which was in charge of Lee's funeral) but their records only go back to the early 1970s. St. Paul's Episcopal Church checked their parish register for both Samuel and his wife, Mattie. They show Samuel being buried in Monroe Cemetery and Mattie at Maplewood in Durham with no extra notations of him possibly being re-interred. A military marker application proved at the time (1967) that he was buried at Monroe City and it was signed by a cemetery official which also means, at that time, the City had a record of his burial (which they do not seem to have now). -pmp (9-22-2021) ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Born in Monroe, NC, to Thomas C. and Blake Bivens Lee, Sam was a WWI veteran and at the time of his death was retired as the postmaster of Monroe. He was postmaster from 1940-1957. Before becoming the postmaster he was president of the People's Savings and Loan Association* and was their Director when he retired from the Post Office. formerly known as Gordon Insurance and Investment Company (as per Margaret Baucom's column about Lee's retirement in "The Union Mail"; clipping found at The Heritage Room in the Lee file, subfolder Sam H. Lee, clipping unidentified and not dated). He was a graduate of Monroe High School and Trinity (now Duke) College and also attended the Wharton School of Business of the University of Pennsylvania. He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He was a Mason, a past commander of the local American Legion, a past president of the Monroe Rotary Club, and on the Advisory Board of Wingate Junior College as well as the board of directors of the Security Bank at Salisbury and also of the Monroe Bank. He died suddenly at his home, 1203 E. Franklin Street, about 6 o'clock on a Saturday afternoon. At the time of his death he was survived by his wife, Mrs. Mattie Moye Adams Lee; two sisters, Mrs. Fred Teal of Wadesboro, Miss Rachel Lee of Monroe; two brothers, Ed Lee of Monroe and Walter Lee of Kannapolis. A member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, funeral services were held there and conducted by Rev. James A. King. Harris-Wells Funeral Home was in charge and interment was in the Monroe cemetery.
