In Spring of 1967 I visited the farm of Norbert Puhalla which is beside the original cemetery & school. Near his farm buildings, I recognized the Hunzeker stone and Norbert agreed to let me take it to Steinauer to my dad's home for safe keeping. Sadly, I was not genealogy savvy enough to recognize the other stones. It was already broken in two when I found it. In the 1980s, before I had taken a pix of the stone, dad gave it to one of the Gottula family when they attending family reunion at K of C Hall beside my dad's home. I heard later, with relief, that it was preserved and set in the Pawnee Cemetery. The Obrists and Gottulas share the same great-grandmother, Maria Walte(i). Her daughter, Mary, married Christen Gottula. My sources have Samuel emigrating with 3 girls, Rosa, Mary and Elizabeth in the Fall of 1863. His only son, Samuel S., was then born June 7, 1866 after Samuel died, Nov. 14, 1865. I have him born 1809 at Kirchleerau, Canton Aargau Switzerland, given his age of 56 at death. Maria married Fred (Fredolin) Obrist on February 10, 1867. He continued to raise and support her four children and had two others, John and Bertha (Burgert). Addendum: as I wrote this up, it occurred to me that one of those in the cemetery could have been Samuel's dau. Rosa b. 7/5/1857. One of our family genealogy specialists, Connie Gunzleman Blake, had tried to trace the whereabouts of Rosa by records. Eventually she run into a blank and led us to wonder if Rosa had died of TB or the like. Thus, my speculation, is she might have been buried in the same cemetery as her father. Lawrence D.
