Samuel J. Oakes was born Oct. 19, 1929, in Marshalltown, to Samuel and Ildra (Smith) Oakes, of Zearing. After graduating from Ames High School and attending Iowa State University, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and graduated in 1952 from officers' training school at Fort Benning, Ga. He married Mary Lou Bixler Aug. 25, 1951. On completing his bachelor's degree in engineering, he was employed by Standard Oil of Ohio in Cleveland. In 1959, he moved his family to Findlay, Ohio, and began his career at Marathon Oil and later became the company's wholesale marketing manager. He was a member of St. Andrew's United Methodist Church in Findlay, Ohio, where he taught Sunday school and the MYF programs. He was a member of the Elks and the American Legion. He served on the Findlay City Council and was a past president of the Findlay Skeet Club. An avid reader and gardener, he enjoyed outdoor activities with friends and family, and hunting with his beloved dogs. He spent many happy hours fishing with loved ones near his cottage on Kelley's Island. He is survived by his wife, Mary; three daughters, Carl (Hannay) Chow, of Los Angeles, Andrea (John) Hassett, of Medina, Ohio, and Leisa (Victor) Nikolajevs, of Berlin Heights, Ohio; four grandchildren, Patrick and Maribeth Hassett, and Samuel and Asher Nikolajevs; and two brothers, Asher D. Oakes, of Zearing, and Henry Smith Oakes, of West Des Moines. His sister, Bethany, died in infancy. Fredregill Funeral Home in Zearing is in charge of arrangements."
