Jayne, head of the Jayne Furniture Company and one of the most prominent business men of the city. The death occurred in Denver, Colorado, where he had gone but a few days before, at 6:00 o’clock Saturday evening. The news of his death spread quickly over the city and caused universal sorrow, for Sam was a favorite with all who knew him. The remains arrived in Boone Monday noon and were taken first to the morgue and later to the family home in North Boone Street, where they lay in state and were viewed by a constant stream of friends. The funeral services were held from the home at 10:30 Wednesday. The Rev. S.M. Wilcox of Le Mars, former rector of Grace Episcopal church here, and a close friend of the family, read the scripture lesson and delivered a very touching eulogy for the deceased as well as a strong sermon on the duties and responsibilities of life, which proved beneficial to all who heard him. He was assisted by the Rev. A.C. Brook, present pastor of the church. A quartette composed of Mrs. Chas. Sebring, Miss Mary Johnson, Mr. Joel E. Carlson and Mr. Al Berglund, with Miss Helen Bonnard at the piano, sang “Lead Kindly Light” and “Oh, Love That Will Not Let Me Go.” Mr. Carlson also sang a beautiful solo, “Thy Will Be Done.” The room containing the casket was literally filled and the casket buried with rare and beautiful flowers, silent tribute to the general love and esteem in which he was held, while the house and spacious lawn were crowded by sorrowing relatives and friends, called together to pay a last tribute of esteem to one whom they had known and loved in life. The Odd Fellows and Knights of Pythias attended in a body. The pall bearers were close social and business friends of the deceased: Dr. A.B. Deering, D.J. Chandler, W.R.Dyer, J.F. Herman W.W. Goodykoontz, and C.C. Canfield. The remains were taken to Linwood Park cemetery east for interment. Mr. Jayne had been suffering for some time with a complication of ailments which finally developed into tuberculosis and caused his death in spite of the brave and determined fight for life which he made. Several weeks ago, with his family, he went to White Bear Lake, Minnesota in hope of receiving relief and benefit, but to no avail, and the first of last week his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Jayne, of Des Moines, took him to Denver as a last resort, but it was too late and he passed away there Saturday evening. Samuel J. Jayne, the son of Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Jayne was born in the city of Boone, May 25, 1876 and died in Denver, Colo., Saturday, August 8th, after an illness of seven years from tuberculosis. The year after he was born his parents removed to Chicago, where they remained for some time. At the age of seventeen, Mr. Jayne came to Boone and entered the service of his uncle. Hon. S.L. Moore in the First National bank. He also made his home with his uncle and a warm feeling not only of kinship but comradeship cemented the relations of the two which savored of father and son, and continued until the end. He remained in the First National bank for a number of years, finally in 1902 purchasing an interest in the F.M. Stowell Furniture company. Later he assumed the entire ownership of this big concern and was its head at the time of his death. Mr. Jane was united in marriage with Miss Lillian Groner on the 23rd of September, 1901 in Des Moines. To this union were born two children, Nanette and William, who with the widow and parents survive. He was a member of Grace Episcopal church and took an active interest in its affairs. He was a member of many organizations, the Masonic, Elks, of which he was a charter member and many others. Mr. Jane was also one of the charter members of the Boone Country club and was one of those instrumental in getting this organization for Boone. Mr. Jayne was taken ill some years ago but all through his illness he braved the future with a splendid heroism, and at his death last Saturday evening those about the bedside were consoled by the calm and peaceful end. He passed beyond just as he had lived, brave and fearless, with a smile and a nod for those about him. He was conscious to the last. The body was brought to this city Monday noon accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Jayne and taken to the family home. Mrs. S.J. Jayne, her two children, her mother, Mrs. Minnie Groner and brother, Walter, arrived Monday morning from White Bear Lake, Minn., where the family had gone hoping that the change would prove beneficial to Mr. Jayne. Only a week ago he went to Denver with his parents but the brave fight was at an end. Among those from out of the city for the funeral were Mrs. W.E. Bond, a cousin, of Chicago, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Schramm, uncle and aunt from Dayton and T.B. Moore and family from Des Moines, Mrs. C.C. Deering, Des Moines.
