Samuel Louis Craig, son of William Clark Craig and Crystal [Miller] Craig, was born October 10, 1915, at Davis City, Iowa, and passed from this life on December 27, 2005 at Cabool, Missouri, at the age of 90 years, 2 months, and 17 days. After his mother's death, Sammy was raised by his grandparents, Oren Leroy Craig and Cordelia [Wheeler] Craig, from the age of four to his teenage years. He attended country schools around Davis City. Times were hard, and he left school to work and help his grandparents. Sammy's life has been full of many experiences. He described the times when he was a younger man as being very hard, as it was for most everyone in those years. He engaged in a variety of jobs just to get by. During his teenage years he at times left Davis City to go where there was work, which included a ranch in Texas and wheat harvest in the Dakotas'. He traveled by hitchhiking and hopping trains. He went to Washington to find work during the depression years, finding refuge in the depression camps along the way. While in Washington he was employed in the fruit orchards, canneries, a dairy farm, and the Hanford Atomic Bomb Plant. In 1938 Sammy married Francis Ellen Neeley, making their home in Washinton, three children were born to this union, Daniel Louis, William Azel, and Kathleen. In 1947 Sammy returned to Davis City, and in April 1948 married Virginia Adkins of Davis City. Three children were born to this union, Laura Joyce, Timmy Guy, and Janna Lynn. In the early years of their marriage Sammy and Virginia operated the Davis City Cafe, known as Sam's Lunch at that time. He and Virginia bought a farm south of Davis City in 1957 where they live for 23 years. Sammy farmed, raising livestock, corn, and beans. Sammy also worked off the farm driving a dump truck, semi-truck, and as a mechanic. In 1969 he purchased a building in Davis City making it a garage for servicing semi trucks and trailers. Sammy and Virginia retired in 1979, selling their farm and business, and relocated to Hollister, Missouri to be closer to their daughters and grandchildren. In 1982 they returned to Davis City. In 1990 Virginia passed away, and Sammy continued to live there until 1998 when he made the decision to move to Mountain Grove, Missouri, to be closer to his daughters and families. He had relatively good health until May, 2001, at which time he suffered from a fractured hip followed by many complications. Sammy was honest, hard working, and always demonstrated a tremendous work ethic. He was willing to lend a hand to family and friends when in need. He had a great love for fishing that began as a boy with a desire that never ended. His favorite place to fish was from the banks of the Grand River. He was a collector of coins and spent years researching family history and the history of Davis City. The effort he made will be a benefit to his heirs for generations to come. His yard and garden were shining examples of the pride he had in everything he did. Family and traditions were always very important to him. He was a wonderful father and grandfather. Sammy was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents; his wife, Virginia; two sons, William Azel Craig and Timmy Guy Craig; a daughter, Kathleen Redd; son-in-law Bill Redd; and four grandchildren: Christy, Kevin, Keith, and Todd Redd. Sammy is survived by three children and their families: son, Dan Craig and his wife Pat, of Yakima, Washington and grandchildren: Zane Craig and Scott Craig of Florida, Lance Craig, Deborah Craig, Danny Craig, Nicole Kilpatrick, Billy Redd, and their families, all of Washington; daughter Joyce Barth and grandsons, David Barth and Tim Barth, all of Branson, MO; daughter, Janna Campbell and husband Dowe and grandchildren, Emily and ross Campbell, all of Mountain Grove, MO, and Cassie Trumble and family of Branson, MO; sister, Lucille Ramos and husband Joe of Greensboro, NC; sister, June Raeside of Hot Springs, Ar; and Nieces and nephews, including special nephew Skip Ramos and wife Liz of Hideaway, Texas. Sammy has been grandfather to 15 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. There has always been a special place in his heart for Virginia's family as well as his own, and his many David City friends. Sammy will be missed and remembered by many.
