Horsman was born in Richmond, Ohio, March 24, 1851, and passed away, after a short illness, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Earl Day, near Gilmore City, Iowa, March 17, 1939, at the age of 87 years, 11 months and 21 days. When he was quite young Mr. Horsman's parents started from Ohio by covered wagon with Kansas as their destination. Just before reaching Kansas his father succumbed to the ague. His mother, unable to endure the hardships of pioneer life, passed away soon after, leaving Sam an orphan too young to remember his parents. A family named Yeager took him until he was able to care for himself. He became separated from his relatives with the exception of his brother David, who passed away about five years ago at St. Johns, Ore. Samuel came to Pocahontas county when a young man. He laid ties for the C. & N. W. railway when it was built through Havelock. He was here when Old Rolfe was moved to its present location, and saw the town of Plover come into existence. On July 7, 1886, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Henderson and lived on a farm half a mile south of Havelock. In 1891 they moved to the farm west of Plover, moving to town in 1917. Seven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Horsman. They are James H. of Pomeroy, John of Council Bluffs, Mrs. Myrtle Smith and Mrs. Edith Stiles of Laurens, Mrs. Belle Day of Gilmore City, Orval Glenn and William of Plover. Mr. Horsman was preceded in death by his wife on March 6, 1935, and since that time he had lived alone in his Plover home except for occasional visits with his children. The last few months of his life were spent with his daughter, Mrs. Earl Day, at the farm home near Gilmore City. He is survived by his seven children, 23 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the McIntire funeral home in Rolfe and in the Plover M.E. church, with Rev. Walter Rothwell officiating, assisted by Rev. E. Redmayne and Rev. S.T. Grove. A quartet sang three songs, "The Old Rugged Cross," "Abive With Me" and "Is My Name Written There?", which were the same hymns sung at the funeral of Mrs. Horsman in March 1935. The singers were Mrs. Ward VanAlstine, Miss Elsie Rothwell, Rev. Rothwell and Curtis Jones. Casket bearers were the three sons of the deceased, James, Glenn and John, and the three sons-in-law, Earl Day, Fay Stiles and Harry Smith. Interment was made in the Powhatan cemetery. A large number of friends and relatives from Plover and the surrounding communities attended the service."
