Littler COX, son of Samuel and Hannah (Littler) Cox, is a native of Logan County, Illinois, where he was born December 20, 1849. He came with his parents to Iowa in 1852, and after spending a year in Polk County, he removed with them to Wayne County, and has since lived on the farm on section 31, Clay Township, which his father entered in the year 1853. He was reared in agricultural pursuits, and has always followed farming and stock-raising, in which he has met with excellent success and is now the owner of a fine farm of 340 acres. Mr. Cox was united in marriage, January 1, 1874, to Miss Martha C. Wiley, daughter of Isaac Wiley, of High Point, Iowa. Mrs. Cox was born in Jackson County, Iowa, May 13, 1854. Five children have been born to this union of whom three are living -- George W., Eva J., Elmer P. Mr. Cox is an enterprising farmer and a highly respected citizen of his township. He is always interested in every enterprise for the good of his county, but has never sought for office, his entire time being devoted to his farm. ******** Wayne County Democrat Dec. 1, 1922 Obituary Samuel L. Cox, the youngest son of Samuel and Hannah Littler Cox was born in Logan county, Ill., December 20th, 1849. He came with his parents to Iowa in 1852 and after spending a year in Polk county he moved with them to Wayne county where they settled on a farm Section 21, Clay Twp., which his father entered in 1853. Here he grew to manhood and spent most of his life. He was reared to agricultural pursuits and always followed farming and stock raising in which he met excellent success. He was united in marriage to Martha C. Wiley, January 1, 1874. To this union were born seven children all of whom are living except two; Mary Olive who died when she was two months old and Samuel Wiley who died when he was seven years old. The surviving children are George W Cox of Corydon, Iowa; Mrs. A. E. Hillyard, Elmer P. Cox, Mrs. B. F. Reno, and Mrs. A. B. Cobball of Allerton , Iowa and who were present during the last illness and death of their father. Besides his immediate family, he leaves to mourn his death an aged sister, Aunt Jane Mendenhall of High Point, Iowa and 18 grandchildren. For many years the family lived on the home farm 11 miles west of Allerton. In 1908 owing to the frail health of the mother they moved to Allerton where they have since resided. When but a young man the deceased united with the United Presbyterian church and ever lived a consistent Christian life. He came of pioneer stock and inherited those rugged virtues that have made our country great. He was honest God-fearing and industrious. He commanded the respect and enjoyed the confidence of all who knew him. Little children loved him. In his Christian life he was a staunch supporter of the church and an exemplary advocate of the Christian faith. As a citizen he was interested and took an active part in every movement for civic welfare and uplift. Unselfish in his life, loving his home devotedly, he was a man whose influence was always for the best and his death is mourned by the entire community. In the passing of Samuel L. Cox, Wayne county has lost one of its foremost and most substantial citizens. A little over a week ago, his companion for almost 49 years was called home to her reward. Since her death his ill health became more pronounced and he longed to be reunited with her in that Home above, where ill health or death never comes. He submitted to an operation at the local hospital, but so malignant was the ailment that little hope was held out for his recovery. He lingered for almost a week, then quietly sank into unconsciousness and his soul went to join his companion in eternity Sunday evening, Nov. 26th, 1922 at 6:40 o'clock, aged 72 years, 11 months and 6 days. The funeral services were held at the home in Allerton Tuesday afternoon, November 28th at 2:00 o'clock conducted by Rev. Guy J. Winslow. The body was laid to rest by the side of his wife in the Allerton cemetery.
