Son of Samuel Lybarger and Mary Taylor OBITUARY THE CHARITON PATRIOT Chariton, Iowa Thursday, April 19, 1894 SUICIDE A Veteran and Pioneer Citizen Cuts His Throat With a Butcher Knife On last Saturday afternoon the lifeless body of Samuel Lybarger was discovered in an excavation under an old house used as a corn crib, on his farm in Ottercreek township, with his throat cut from ear to ear. Firmly grasped in his right hand was a butcher knife, freshly sharpened, with which the deed was accomplished. The rash act is supposed to have been committed while in a temporary aberration of mind resulting from poor health and brooding over his financial embarrassments and long delayed justice on the part of the United States government to award him the pension due him as a soldier of the war of the rebellion. Coroner J. H. Stanton was notified late Saturday evening and Sunday morning, he and Sheriff Gartin drove out to the scene for the purpose of holding an inquest. A jury consisting of W. H. Ruble, John Chandler and David Marker was called. The finding was that he came to his death by an instrument in his own hands. The body was prepared for burial and the funeral was preached at 3 o'clock, interment taking place in the nearby cemetery. Deceased was over 60 years old, a widower, he and a son living on the farm alone. Mr. Lybarger was a brother-in-law of W. H. Knight, of this city. Thus has passed away another old veteran who fought for the life of the government that has sent him to an untimely grave through its indolent red tape injustice. Obituary courtesy of Charles M.
