Landes, one of the landmarks of that section, passed away Monday afternoon about 3.30 o’clock at his home near Marlowe at the ripe old age of 79 years, eight months and 16 days. Death was due to arterial sclerosis and the deceased had been failing in health for some months. The funeral will be held Wednesday morning, relatives and friends assembling at the late home at 10 o’clock and proceeding to New Harmony Methodist Protestant Church, of which he had long been a member. Landes, one of the landmarks of that section, passed away Monday afternoon about 3.30 o’clock at his home near Marlowe at the ripe old age of 79 years, eight months and 16 days. Death was due to arterial sclerosis and the deceased had been failing in health for some months. The funeral will be held Wednesday morning, relatives and friends assembling at the late home at 10 o’clock and proceeding to New Harmony Methodist Protestant Church, of which he had long been a member. The last services will be conducted by the pastor, Rev.Mr. Simms, assisted by a former pastor, Rev. Charles Alexander, of Maryland Line, Md. The interment will be made in the graveyard at Old Harmony church. Mr. Landes was for many years a widely known stonemason and countless structures throughout Berkeley county and barn foundations attest to his skill and proficiency. For some years prior to his death he had been engaged in farming. He was a native of Dauphin county, Pa., and served in the Union army during the Civil War, on one occasion being wounded, losing one of his fingers. He had a brother to die in the notorious southern prison at Andersonville. Coming here about the close of the war, he married Miss Mary Kershner, a daughter of the late Samuel Kershner, who survives him together with the following children: John D., Samuel N., Robert, Mrs. Minnie E. Wiland, Misses Clara and Helen, all of Marlowe; three brothers, Joseph Landes, near Hagerstown; Christian L. Landes, of Marlow and Martin Landes, of Bedington.
