Benjamin, 81, native and highly esteemed citizen of Greenwood County, died this morning at 2 o'clock at his home in Coronaca after a long illness. Mr. Benjamin was born near Greenwood, a son of Samuel Harrison Benjamin (b. 1841) and Isabella Major (Benjamin)(b.1846, d. 1913). His father, after serving as a Confederate soldier in Co F, 3rd SCV, came from Laurens County to Greenwood where he spent the rest of his life (d. 1910) engaged in farming and in merchandising. His father's home was in the Quarry community, a mile northeast of Greenwood on the C & W C Railroad. Samuel Harrison Benjamin was a man of much influence in his immediate community and in Greenwood. Samuel Major Benjamin's mother, Isabella Major (Benjamin), was a grand-daughter of John and Isabella Marshall Major, natives of Ireland who came to America early in life and settled first in Virginia, then removing to Anderson District, and to this section then in Abbeville County. Their son, Samuel Major, married Matilda Turner of the Turner family of Buck Level and they reared a large family of sons and daughters. Samuel Major and Matilda Turner (Major) were grand-parents of Samuel Major Benjamin; their daughter, Isabella Major, married Samuel Harrison Benjamin. Mr. S. M. Benjamin was born May 29, 1868 and was in his 82 year. He attended the school for years taught for a number of years in Greenwood by Prof Simon P Booser. Mr. Benjamin began farming as a young man in his native neighborhood and continued to do so until his health failed. He retired from active work for some years. Mr. Benjamin was a member of the Baptist denomination from early youth. He had served as Clerk, Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent and as Deacon of the Coronaca Baptist Church and, at the time of his death, was an honorary Deacon of this church. Also, he had served on the Executive Committee of the Abbeville Baptist Association and as moderator of this body. Mr. Benjamin was married twice: First to Katielou Hildegarde (Kate) Roderick and they had four children: The children who survive are: Ray Neal Benjamin of Atlanta, Hon Samuel Horace Benjamin of Coronaca; William Earl Benjamin of Greenville; and Guy Forrester Benjamin, of Dry Branch, GA. His second marriage was to Nannie Owen Dodd of Spartanburg and she survives with two children: James Dodd Benjamin, of Greenwood, and Mrs Mary Elizabeth Benjamin (Hanson), of Coronaca. Three sisters survive: Mrs. Thomas J. (Rosa) Snyder, Ware Shoals; Mrs. Matilda Mixon, Augusta; and Mrs. J. L (Daisy) Langston, Augusta. Two brothers: Jones Bailey Benjamin, Greenwood and Winfred J.
