Storm Lake Pilot Tribune - Jun 30, 1905 - The death of Samuel Matheson, a resident of Buena Vista county since 1869 and one of the homesteaders, occurred on Sunday June 25, 1905 at his home on section 22, Elk township. Mr Matheson had been ill since last December but in the spring he seemed to be much better and it was believed that he would recover but for the past month he has been extremely sick and his death was not unexpected. Samuel Matheson was born in Fawn* in the county of York, near Toronto, Canada on June 1, 1823 and was therefore 82 years and 25 days of age at the time of his death. He lived with his parents until Oct 28, 1847 when he was married to Elizabeth Armour who died Aug 15, 1871. To them were born 10 children of whom but four are living. They are Mrs G.Y. Board of Duncombe, Mrs C.W. Garberson of Storm Lake, William of San Francisco, and Hugh of Michigan. He moved with his family from Canada on April 12, 1869 coming directly to the home where he has since lived in Elk township, which he homesteaded. On March 1, 1894 he was married to Mrs Harvey who survives him and who attended him most solicitously during his illness. Mr Matheson was a man who commanded the confidence of all with whom he came in contact. On account of his long residence in the county, he was quite well known and was as generally esteemed and respected. His death removed from the county one of its stable citizens and much beloved men. The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon, short services being held at the house after which services were held in the Elk Methodist Episcopal church which stood on the corner of his farm. Interment was made in the cemetery at the church. The sons were not able to reach here for the funeral but the two daughters together with other relatives including W.C. Garberson of Sibley, Mr and Mrs Rufus Garberson of Newell and the Garberson families of this city and Alta attended the funeral. *Contributed by Eleanor - “Vaughan.” Vaughan Township in York County is now known as the City of Vaughan.
