White, Sr., 94, Nevada's oldest citizen and for the past two thirds of a century a resident of Story county, died at his home 1104 Third street, Saturday evening at 8 o'clock and the funeral services were held at the family home today at 2:30, after which the interment was in the Nevada cemetery. Mr. White had been in robust health and of a clear, bright mind until shortly after the death of Mrs. White, four years ago in April since which time he had been declining and for the past year had been confined to his home continually. All of the six living children and the most of the grandchildren and great grandchildren were here for the funeral. Samuel M. White, was a native of Bartholomew county, Indiana, where he was born January 4, 1836, a son of John Fletcher White and Jane Snodgrass-White. He was married August 17, 1854, at Kokomo, Indiana, to Miss Mary Ellen Carr, who died at the family home in Nevada, April 9, 1926. Nine children were born to this union of whom three died in early childhood and six are still living. The six children are Mrs. Elizabeth Gallagher of Nevada, Samuel White Jr., of Nevada, A. A. White of Colo, William Turl White of Nevada; Mrs. Hattie Gearhart of Colo and Homer White of Nevada. In addition to these there are 10 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild. Ten years following their marriage in Indiana or in the spring of 1864, Mr. and Mrs. White, with their children came out to Story county, in Iowa, and located on a farm on the west side of section 24 in Nevada township, about seven miles southeast of Nevada. There they continued to live, work and prosper, until about 24 years ago, when Mr. and Mrs. White retired and moved to Nevada, locating in the commodious home at the corner of Third and J avenue. There they spent their declining years in comfort and happiness as long as the state of their health would permit. Much of the time their sons Samuel and Turl were with them and during the latter years the elder daughter, Mrs. Gallagher, had been with them, had charge of the home and assisted in the care of the aged couple in their declining years. Early in life Mr. and Mrs. White became members of the Chruch of God and they died in that faith. Both were stalwart, God-fearing people and consistent to their religious faith. The funeral service at the home this afternoon was in charge of Rev. Joseph E. Williams of Gladbrook, a pastor of that denomination. Mr. White was a man of tine character, of industry and integrity and stood high in the community in which he had lived for two-thirds of a century.
