He was the youngest son of a family of eight children, his father James B. Miller and his mother Barbara Foster. Both parents were born in Dayton, Ohio. He was the last of the family to pass away. He came to Iowa when a boy of 19 years, locating in Linn county, near Robins. This was in 1847. In 1849 he married Miss Louisa Howe, to which union he is survived by six sons, as follows: John F. Miller, of Abaro, Okla., Samuel Miller, jr., of Robins; William V. Miller, of Stillwater, Okla.; Geo. W. Miller, of Monroe township; Joseph C. Miller, at home, and Charles C. Miller, of Marion. In 1877 he was married to Miss Jane Hunter, who survives him with the following children: William E. Miller, residing north of Cedar Rapids; Jas. B. Miller, residing in Idaho; Freddir R., who died in infancy; and Geraldine, at home. Besides these remain thirty-five grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. He was a member of the Linn County Old Settlers' association, hardly ever missing a reunion till last year. At one time he was a member of the Odd Fellows order and was a member of No. 6 A.F. & A.M., at Marion. His mother was a Presbyterian and Mr. Miller was baptized in this faith. He expressed to the very last he was not afraid to die and had the hope of a life beyond. Of his active social and business life, he mingled with his fellows and had the respect and confidence of all. These later years of retirement have been spent in the home. Here was always a welcome to children and relatives and friends. He had seen the development of the county and the nearby city, and as far as ale did his share toward such growth. While he could go over the past history, yet he lived in the present and for those now upon earth. He took great delight in the recent History of Linn County and would read over the record of his county, and it was a never-failing source of comfort to him. Of a striking personal figure, one was never disappointed in learning by friendship or business dealing, he was everyone's friend. He maintained his usual health until the last day of January, when a stroke of paralysis came. From this he rallied, and all had hopes he would be around again, but on Monday, Feb. 24 at 4 o'clock, retaining all his facilities, in the midst of his loved ones, his spirit passed away. He was thus 84 years, 9 months and 2 days old. The funeral services were held at the home and at Shiloh church Thursday at 11 o'clock, by Rev. C.W. Cleveland, a former pastor. The pallbearers were R.E. Tripp, John C. Smith, Caroline Bunting, John Emmons, A.W. Atkins, Ernest Reiter. These also conducted the Masonic service at the conclusion of the sermon. Singing was by J.E. Bromwell, Robert Toms and Mrs. V.G. Shumack. All the sons were present at the service. Mrs. Steen of Delmar was present.
