PATTON DEAD Postmaster and Former County Recorder and Sheriff Passed Away Monday Afternoon. Had Been Ill a Long Time Leaves Many Friends Funeral Services at the Residence at 2:30 Wednesday. Samuel N. Patton died at his home here Monday afternoon after a long illness. He had for the last 21 years been a resident of this place and had taken a prominent part in business and political affairs, having been several times elected to county offices and holding the position of postmaster at the time of his death. Mr. Patton was possessed of an unusually bright and pleasant disposition and no one could see the humorous side of things more quickly than he. He was quick and apt at repartee but his wit was always free from the sting of malice or hatred. He was singularly lenient to the faults of others and always saw the good rather than the bad in those with whom he came in contact. The funeral services were held from the late residence Wednesday after noon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. W. B. Dunham, of the Presbyterian Church. Interment was made in the Hlllsboro Cemetery. The following sketch of his life was read at the funeral: The subject of this brief sketch, Samuel N. Patton, son of Joseph V. and Jane Fairley Patton, was born in what is known as the Fall Creek neighborhood, on the 3rd day of October, 1847, and died at his home in Hlllsboro, Ohio, April 12, 1909, aged 61 years. He grew to manhood and became a man of influence among the acquaintances of his youth. It can be truly said that, '"Those who knew him best loved him most." He was married to Miss Margaret Elliott, May 10, 1872. Four children are living, two sons, Stanley and Richard, and two daughters, Jane and Margaret. All were with their father at his death except his son, Stanley, who was compelled to return to his home in the west a few weeks ago. The Bible declares that It is appointed unto all men once to die; It also declares "that after death the judgment." It is not for us to say what is the final destiny of any one ; but the "Book" does say ''By their fruits ye shall know them." And, taking this declaration of scripture as our guide in forming an estimate of our deceased brother, we are free to say, "All Is well." Let us leave the balances in the hands of "One" who Is "Love," and who "doeth all things well." Much could be said of the life and energy of the deceased. S. N. Patton came to Hlllsboro as an official, selected by his constituents to fill the office of County Recorder. In that office his stirling qualities were manifested and he was chosen Sheriff of this county serving two terms in each office. At the time of his death he was postmaster in Hlllsboro. Amid all these duties which assume something of a political character, let us remember, that Mr, Patton had been for years and up to the time of his death, a trusted and efficient officer in his church, the First Presbyterian Church of Hlllsboro, Ohio. This is the record which his church, and this community, are only too glad to testify to as the acts of a Christian man, an upright citizen, a good neighbor. Let us not question the Master's dealings, Leaning on Faith here, we know that all will be made clear here after. 'Then farewell dear friends Thou art gone from our sight, To the 'Land of the Leal' Sweet home of the soul : Where the presence of God That giveth the light, Will the strength of thy virtue And manhood unfold."
