He graduated from Manning High School and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He owned and operated Sam's Esso, later Exxon, for 53 years. He was a member of the Lions Club, the Knights of Phythias, the Woodmen of the World, the Shriners, Williams-Burgess American Legion Post #68, the S.C. Thoroughbred Association and was a lifetime member of St. Peters Masonic Lodge. He served on the board of the Federal Land Bank and the advisory board of NBSC. He was member of Manning United Methodist Church, where he formerly served on the board of trustees. He was preceded in death by three brothers, John McLaurin Gamble, Jr., Robert Eugene Gamble and Clarence Carlyle Gamble; and two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Lybrand and Daisy Katurah Caughman.
