Another source of his death comes from newspaperarchives.com-- Ames Intelligencer (issue date 10 January 1879) which says the following: "Samuel McDaniel, one of the oldest settlers in the county, died at his home on East Indian last Friday." (Note: East Indian Creek was in Nevada Township, Story County, Iowa). A document which confirms this information is recorded in the Story County, Iowa, Probate Book D. On page 292 it says he died on the 3rd day of January 1879. It lists his surviving wife and children at the time of his death. The children were: Samuel P.(aged 26), Martha Jane (aged 16), William F. (aged 14), Daniel E. (age 9). (Note: the probate record gives his name as Samuel G. McDaniel, but on one of his children's marriage records, the child gave his father's name as Samuel Pierce McDaniel). At age 37, Samuel married Martha Caroline Clark on 18 March 1850 in Mahaska County, Iowa. Martha was 19 when they married, so Samuel was 18 years older than her. There are several connections the McDaniels have to the Clark family. First, they were married by Rev. John C. Robbins (in the Robbins' home). The Reverend was married to Martha's sister Mary Eliza Clark. Second, in March 1857, Martha's sister Irena Abigail and her family took refuge in Story County, probably living with the McDaniels, after they fled from the Indian attacks known as the Spirit Lake Massacre. (The Thomas family moved to Albion, Marshall County, Iowa, shortly after Irena had a baby in Nevada Township, Story County in Sep 1857). Third, Samuel McDaniel was a Justice of the Peace in the 1860s in Story County, Iowa, and he performed the marriage of John W. Clark and Emily McGuire on 15 May 1864 in said county. John W. Clark was Martha's only brother and he was the youngest of the nine known children in the John B. Clark family. And fourth, the 1870 census shows that for a time, Martha's younger sister Rachael "Alice Billings" lived with the McDaniels. In the Story County community, Samuel built a water power saw-mill in 1855-56 (page 386 of the above mentioned history by William G. Allen). Samuel was active in land purchases and sales in both Jasper County, Iowa, and Story County, Iowa. On May 31, 1869, Samuel and Martha sold land for the price of $1 to the "Trustees of Mound Cemetery" for it to become part of Mound Cemetery. (Story County Deed Book R pp 270-271). At least two of Samuel and Martha's children died very young and are also buried in Mound Cemetery along with Samuel's mother Jane McDaniel (maiden name unknown) and his sister Jane McDaniel who never married.
