| Description | : | Samuel was born 14 February 1836 in Lancaster County, VA. He attended VMI and Richmond College. He read law under his father. Enlisting 1 June 1861, he was made Captain of Company F of the 47th Regiment of Virginia Infantry. He was wounded in the shoulder at the Battle of Frasers Farm and contracted Typhoid Fever while recovering. After the war, he practiced law and was Superintendant of Schools in Lancaster.
