Born Jan. 29, 1927, in Garrett County, he was the son of the late John Wesley Steyer and Etta Grace (Thompson) Steyer. He also was preceded in death by two brothers, Arthur Steyer and Harold Steyer and three sisters, Wilma Bittinger, Lottie Harvey and Helen Steyer. Mr. Steyer was a diary farmer and maple syrup producer. Surviving are his wife Evelyn (Custer) Steyer, two sons, Samuel Ray Steyer Jr. and Randall Alan Steyer, both of Oakland; one daughter, Maxine Steyer, Gaithersburg; two brothers, John Steyer and Ronald Steyer, both of Oakland; three sisters, Mabel Issacs, Phoenix, Ariz.; Jessie Beckman and Rene Custer both of Oakland and four granddaughters, Friends will be received at the durst funeral Home, Oakland, on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 a.m. Services will be conducted at the White United Methodist Church on Friday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Susan Ganoe, and the Rev. William McAllister officiating, Interment will be in the White Church Cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made in the form of contributions to the White United Methodist Church.
