Description	:	Sam McClaren, 85, of 409 Third Avenue, S.W., State Center, Iowa died Thursday, March 06, 2003 at his home in State Center. Interment followed services in the Rose Hill Memorial Gardens, Marshalltown. Samuel Russell was born on January 05, 1918 in Sullivan County, Missouri, the son of Luther Clarence & Alma Ellen (Garrett) McClaren. He was raised in Regar, Missouri until his father's death when his mother moved the family to Marshalltown. He graduated from the Marshalltown High School in 1937. Samuel Russell was born on January 05, 1918 in Sullivan County, Missouri, the son of Luther Clarence & Alma Ellen (Garrett) McClaren. He was raised in Regar, Missouri until his father's death when his mother moved the family to Marshalltown. He graduated from the Marshalltown High School in 1937. Following graduation he became a musician at a local radio station. Sam married Thelma Mowery and they had three children. He started a band called "The Sons of Fun" where they traveled around playing for many years in dance halls and nightclubs. Sam and Thelma later divorced and he married Elma Reta Coffman, May 06, 1952 in Rockford, Illinois. Sam was employed by Marshall Manufacturing from 1937-1942 in Marshalltown and moved to Rockford, Illinois where he was employed by Barber Coleman Company from 1942 to 1977 when he retired. He returned to State Center in 1986. He was a former member of the Moose Lodge and Eagles in Rockford. Sam is survived by two sons: Sam (Elizabeth) McClaren Jr., Clarksville, Tennessee, and Dennis (Sherry) McClaren, Rockford, Illinois; a daughter: Monya (Jack) Bland, Denver, Colorado; a step-daughter: Sandra (John) Gumaer, San Jose, California; three grandchildren: Debra and David Bland, Michelle McClaren, and a step-grandson: Lewis Gumaer and a sister: Louise (Robert) Bruce, Marshalltown, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Reta (March 1996); a grandson: Daniel Bland and a sister: Darlene Bodie. Pursel-Davis Funeral Home, Marshalltown, Iowa
