MCCLUSKY--Samuel "Sam" Schatz, 97, McClusky, died April 27,2001, in an Underwood care center, where he had been a resident for the past six years. Sam was born Sept. 21, 1903, on the family homestead in Whittaker Township, south of McClusky. He was the son of Adam and Margaret (Huether) Schatz. He was raised and educated in Sheridan County. Sam was united in marriage to Edna Jurczewsky June 30, 1928, in McClusky. They purchased his parents' homestead and lived there. He farmed and raised cattle for well over 50 years. They also lived in McClusky so their children could attend the McClusky schools. Sam and Edna were married 72 years when she died March 1, 2000. Sam was a kind and gentle man with a wonderful subtle sense of humor. He dearly loved his family and the many family activities that ensued. He had a great love of the land and all of his family animals, many of which became his pets. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman and spent many happy hours hunting with his two sons and friends. Sam could always be found on his John Deere tractor or in his pickup with his dog "Beau." He also enjoyed a good game of pinochle with family and friends. Sam was a past member of the Lions Club, Senior Center, Wildlife Club and Farmers Union, all of McClusky. He was a member of the Bismarck Elks Club. He is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law, Arlen, McClusky, and Don and Doris, Bella Vista, Ark.; one daughter and son-in-law DeLila and John Wagner, Bismarck; eight grandchildren, William Wagner, Portland, Ore., Lynne Wagner, Jackson Hole, Wyo., Laurie Holvorson, Bismarck, James Schatz, Chicago, Ill., Elizabeth (Schatz) and her husband Kurt Wagner, Denver, Colo., David (Laura) Schatz, River Falls, Wis., Keven Schatz, Palm Springs, Calif., and Steven (Susan) Schatz, Hemet, Calif., four great grandchildren: one sister, Marie Jeske, Portland, Ore., and one brother, Herman Schatz, Billings. Mont. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna; one grandson, Jack Wagner; his parents; two brothers, Reinhold and Jacob; and five sisters, Pauline Wahl, Sophie Wahl, Lydia Wahl, Martha Millhouse and Leah Schatz.
