Samuel S. McMaster died at his residence, Cottingham's Ferry, Worcester county, Tuesday, the 3d inst., in the 67th year of his age. For may years Mr. McMaster was actively engaged in politics, and held many places of honor and trust in his State and county. His first appearance in public life was in 1846, when he was elected to represent Worcester county in the General Assembly. In 1850 he was chosen for a seat in the State convention which framed the constitution of eighteen hundred and fifty-one. In 1857 he was elected to the State Senate to fill an unexpired term. In 1862 he was placed by Gov. Bradford on his personal staff with the rank of colonel. In 1865 he was appointed a member of the school board of Worcester county, which position he held for three years and declined a reappointment. When the State constitutional convention of 1857 was called, Col. McMaster was again elected as one of the representatives of Worcester county in that body. He was a member of three of the standing committees of that convention and took an active part in all its proceedings, and especially in the discussion which resulted in the creation of the new county of Wicomico out of parts of Worcester and somerset counties. In 1858 he became a member of the Protestant Episcopal Church, and held various offices in that church. For several years past he has not engaged actively in politics, but has at all times taken much interest in public affairs. When Gov. Hamilton went into office Col. McMaster was prominently spoken of for State librarian. He had for some time past lived quietly upon his farm, and conducted, with his son, a general mercantile business. The cause of his death was paralysis, the first stroke of which he received two weeks ago. Col. McMaster was a man who was not only well known in his native county of Worcester, but his activity in politics made him widely known throughout the State of Maryland. On his entry into public life he was a Whig; during the war he espoused the cause of the Union, and since then was affiliated with the democratic party. He leaves three sons and a daughter, the latter of whom is the wife of C. C. Lloyd, a well known druggist, of Pocomoke City. His brother, Dr. John T. B. McMaster, also resides in Pocomoke City.
