Description	:	Samuel Scofield, son of Joseph and Eunice (Buxton) Scofield, was born 26 Dec 1716 in Newfield (Stamford), Fairfield, CT. He died at the age of 84 on 13 December 1799 in Stamford, CT. His will was probated 27 February 1800. While a bachelor, Samuel purchased 30 acres on Newfield Ridge, Stamford, Ct on Jan 9, 1736. Read More	Samuel Scofield, son of Joseph and Eunice (Buxton) Scofield, was born 26 Dec 1716 in Newfield (Stamford), Fairfield, CT. He died at the age of 84 on 13 December 1799 in Stamford, CT. His will was probated 27 February 1800. While a bachelor, Samuel purchased 30 acres on Newfield Ridge, Stamford, Ct on Jan 9, 1736. ("Connecticut Ancestry," Vol 42, #1 Aug 1999, Pg 10: John Davenport of the town of Stamford for 190 pounds paid by Samuel Scofield son to Joseph Scofield deceased of Stamford sold 30 acres of land lying near and upon the upper end of Newfield ridge bounded on the west by Newfield highway, the North by the high way and on the other sides by John Davenports land signed by John Davenport on this 9th day of January 1737. Witnessed by Samuel Hait and Abraham Davenport.) Samuel Scofield became a prominent landowner and a prosperous farmer. On May 4, 1779 he was one of the petitioners to establish the North Stamford Parish On March 1, 1743, Samuel Scofield married Elizabeth Ambler, daughter of John and Elizabeth (Morehouse) Ambler of Stamford. Rev. Huntington's REGISTRATION OF BIRTHS, MARRIAGES AND DEATHS OF STAMFORD FAMILIES states: "SAMUEL Scofield, 3d., of Newfield, and Elizabeth Ambler were married on Mar. 1, 1743-4 (& 12 children): Samuel Scofield, born Dec. 26, 1744 Elijah Scofield, born June 17, 1746 Rebecca Scofield, born Jan. 21, 1747-8 Elizabeth Scofield, born Apr. 14, 1750 Sarah Scofield, born Mar. 27, 1752 Neazer Scofield, born May 22, 1754 Stephen Scofield and Hannah Scofield, twins, born Apr. 8, 1756 Rachel Scofield, born Dec. 6, 1757 Elijah Scofield, born Feb. 23, 1760 David Scofield, born Sept. 18, 1764 Ezekiel Scofield, born July 30, 1767." Elizabeth Ambler Scofield died after July 30, 1767. (Possibly in childbirth of Ezekiel Scofield). Secondly, Samuel married Mrs. Deborah Weed, a widow. No known children were born to this union. His military service is somewhat confusing. In 1758, Samuel Scofield, age 22, fought in the French and Indian War (1754-1763) as a part of the Connecticut Soldiers who were mustered into the colonial militia between 1755 and 1762. Samuel's 1758 pay record was listed on page 61 of the Connecticut payrolls. He was in the 3rd Regmt, under Col/Capt. Eleazer Fitch; Fifth Company commanded by Capt. Jonathan Latimore, Jr. Samuel was reputed to have a wooden leg, possibly as a result of service in the French and Indian War. The Encyclopedia of Connecticut Biography: Genealogical Memorial (Vol 4, Page 29) for Horace Granville Scofield mentions that Samuel "served in the American Army". He might have been a supporter of the revolution, but he would have been sixty in 1776, making fighting problematic. This is substantiated in the Adjutants-General's 'Record Service of Connecticut Men' (1889). "Samuel Scofield, 3d" is listed in the "Men that served at home but did not go to the Saw Pits or West Chester". He was discharged on Jan 28, 1777 and served 1 Month and 4 days. His will was dated June 22, 1798 and was probated on 27 February 1800.
