Samuel Sherard was bron in Fannettsburg, Franklin county, Pa., February 15, 1810. His mother's maiden name Gilbert, an exemplary Christian woman, who was greatly devoted to her Bible and other Christian literature. Her Sabbaths, doubly sacred for the gathering of her family about her, were also improved by her in reading and explaining the scriptures. Her son, Samuel, partook in a large degree of her great mind. His father, John Sherard, was a kind hearted, indulgent parent, and of a very elevated character. His father's family consisted of five children, four daughters and one son, of which Samuel was the second child. Catharine, wife of the Rev. J. C. Ault, was the oldest, and preceded him to the Heavenly world. He was the pet of his father and mother and the pride of his sisters. At the early age of 15 he took a great interest in helping to support his father's family by days work, and received a man's wages; and with most touching indications of joy carried home every cent of his earnings to his mother. He never seemed to have thought that he was entitled to any share of it for amusement or luxury. In 1835 he was married to Catharine Shoff by the Rev. Sample near New Castle, Pa. To them were born seven children, of whom two sons and two daughters are living. He was bereaved by the death of his wife. Father Sherard was a great bible reader and seemed to feast on the rich promises of the Divine Word. Father Sherard was a sweet singer and always delighted to sing the praise of God in the public congregation and in the home. He was in the earlier part of his life a constant attendant of church and Sabbath school. His closing days were very brief and full of suffering, but were characterized by patience and resignation to God's will. He passed away quietly under the pressure of age, (with his daughters in Garrison, Neb.) Friday, August 7, 1891. The funeral services were held in the church at Garrison, Rev. L. F. Smith, pastor, preaching a very comforting sermon, from James, 4:13-14. The remains were laid in the cemetery at Garrison, where they will rest in peace until the resurrection of the just, when we hope with all his loved ones to greet him in Heaven. MRS. C. N. H.
