Read More	The State Newspaper November 29 1904 Funeral of Mr SS Fraser A Striking Figure in Georgetown's History Has Passed Away Special to the State Georgetown Nov 28 The funeral services for Mr Sidney Samuel Fraser were held in the old Church of Prince George Winyah Thursday morning at 10 o'clock at which historic shrine the deceased has been a constant worshiper for many years The rector Dr GH Johnston conducted the rites in a manner particularly impressive and the musical service was beautifully solemn and sweet. The remains were then laid to rest in the family plot in the cemetery by the side of loved ones who had gone before. Many devoted relatives and sympathizing friends were present. Beautiful floral offerings were placed on the grave among them being a handsome laurel wreath from the Daughters of the Confederacy. The pall bearers were honorary BA Munnerln Dr GFS Wright WH Dorrill JR Sparkman HL Smith Active WP Smith H Schenk HL Oliver Dr CW Bailey JH Collins Jos Kaminski. Mr Fraser leaves four sons to mourn his loss Messrs HW Fraser SS Fraser Jr Jas H Fraser and Rees Fraser. With the exception of Mr SS Fraser Jr who was unable to arrive home in time from Schenedtady NY all of them were present at the funeral. With the passing of Mr SS Fraser from the scene of his long life's labors a striking and notable figure has sunk from view forever. His history has been the history of Georgetown for the past 60 odd years and in all that time he played an active and leading part in all events of importance that have transpired here, commercially and socially. Whatever the emergency he was always equal to it and whether fortune frowned or smiled he wrought ever onward and upward fearlessly and triumphantly to the end. With all the culture and the fine manners of the old southern gentleman he combined the progressive ideas and keen business acumen of the new order of things and in all his undertakings both of a public and private nature, he has been eminently successful. He took a keen interest in life and all his surroundings. A hearty but dignified enthusiasm characterized his every action and even in his age he was full of spirit of youth. His wide range of knowledge gained by personal observation extensive reading and conserved by a wonderfully retentive memory was encyclopedic in its accuracy and fullness of detail. He was an authority on local history and could give many interesting reminiscences of notable persons who have transpired here within his lifetime. Some of these reminiscences were put into writing by request and published several years ago but unfortunately the series was never completed. Another one of our old landmarks is gone. Another golden link that bound the past to the present is broken. In the death of Mr Fraser Georgetown has lost one of her most honored and useful citizens and the State a distinguished exponent of her best citizenship. Mr Samuel Sidney Fraser was born in Florence County in 1829. He came to Georgetown and on the death of his father in 1844 commenced work here with the mercantile establishment of Lathers & Company. At the outbreak of the war he enlisted with Co A 10th SC Regiment but saw no active service on account of sickness. He was officer for the Confederate government for Georgetown under the treasury department during the remainder of the war. He took active part in the eviction of the carpet baggers being county chairman of Democratic party during the stirring days of 186 and presided at the great political meeting when Gen Wade Hampton was here in that year. He was appointed county treasurer on Hampton's taking office and continued therein eight years. He opened his present insurance business in 1859 and up to his death has continued actively therein as senior member of the well and widely known firm of Fraser & Company. He was married in 1869 to Miss Sarah McLeod Wilson daughter of Mr Hugh Wilson of Wadmalaw and six years after her death married Miss Martha Clara Ford daughter of Mr J Rees Ford of Georgetown County.
