Read More	The Emporia Weekly Gazette, 22 Sep 1927, Thursday CIVIL WAR VETERAN HAD BIG PART IN BUILDING MADISON Special to the Gazette: Madison, Sept. 22.--Sam Smith, of Madison, is one of the men who literally helped to build that town. He is a stone mason, and for 40 years his work went into most of the foundations and cellar walls and brick work in that town. In addition to this, he had built hundreds of outside cellars--caves--for houses which had no basements. Fifty years ago he and his chum, Jack Morris, helped to lay stone walls around a section of the William Martindale farm land, east of Madison. Portions of those dry walls still are standing, though many of them have been removed to give place to barbed wire. A man named Simpson had the contract for four miles of stone wall to be built on the Martindale land at $2.50 a rod. He hired Smith and Harris to do the work, paying them 50c a rod. They could lay four rods a day, which gave them a wage of $2 a day--mighty good pay in those days, when $2 would buy more than $5 would today. Smith also worked for a considerable time at farm work on the Martindale ranch. HIS WORK STILL STANDS. Caves built by Sam Smith many years ago are in excellent condition. He is proud of the lasting quality of his work. The first cave he built was for Henry Marshall on the Marshall farm southwest of town, and on scores of farms where there are no cellars he built caves. He laid stone on the foundation of the Madison bank building in '85, with Alex Crowe, who was interested in the bank, bossing the job. And Crowe saw to it that there was no slighting the work, even had there been any such inclination. Smith did part of the work, with A. Jardiniere, on the basement walls and foundation of the old opera house, and also he worked with W. H. Osmun. He did most of the stonework on the Frazee and Larson residences, and built the retaining walls around the yards. He worked for the Imthurns and the Frankhousers and for Philip Horst, the contractor, who died recently. He has forgotten dozens of the buildings he worked on, he says, and kept no records of his jobs. He got $2 to $3 a day for stone masonry. HIS MARRIAGE SUCCESSFUL Probably the most satisfactory accomplishment to himself was his marriage, on Thanksgiving day, 1894, to Mrs. Mary E. Cossey--and in acquiring a wife he acquired four small children, whose father was dead. Smith was a bachelor and unused to children, and there were dire prophecies, but the Cossey children never lacked a father after they took Sam Smith into the family. All are grown and in homes of their own, now, but Mr. Smith is an interested in them and their welfare, and they in him, as though he were their real father. "It was a mighty good day for my children, and for me as well, when I married Sam Smith," says Mrs. Smith. She had found looking out for four small children a strenuous job, and says the only criticism of his treatment of her children she ever made of Mr. Smith was that he was too indulgent to them. On the other hand, Mr. Smith acquired a home and family, and seems as entirely satisfied as the rest of the family. STILL WORKED AT 80 Mr. Smith in his 80th year built a big double brick garage for Mrs. Cossey's daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hind, jr., a lot of cement walls, and did all the mason work in remodeling their house. This family had ten producing oil wells on their farm. He built a water tank, walks, and did other stone and cement work on the Roy Dillie ranch, near Phoenix, Arizona. Mrs. Dille is Mrs. Smith's daughter, another daughter lives in Ohio, and her son, Jay Cossey, lives in Kansas City. Mr. Smith has improved and added to their home in Madison, has made it modern, and it is a pretty and comfortable place. He enjoys working in his vegetable garden, and occasionally will tell the grandchildren some of his Civil war experiences--but they say it is hard to get him started on that line. FOUGHT THROUGH WAR. Sam Smith enlisted in Company D, 101st Indiana Volunteer Infantry, at Noblesville, in 1862, and served throughout the rest of the war. He was with Buell's army at Louisville, then transferred to Rosecran's division. He was in the battles of Perryville, Mill Springs, Stone River, Chickamauga, and was with Sherman in the campaign against Atlanta. "During that time," says Mr. Smith, "we were fighting ever day and I lost track of the times and places of our engagements. The last battle I was in was at Bentonville, N.C., and I was at Raleigh at the time of Johnston's surrender. Sam Smith cast his first vote while in service, for Lincoln, in 1864. The governor of Indiana was supposed to have made arrangements for the boys of his state to cast their ballots in the field, but there was a stitch some place, and consequently no election day for the Hoosiers. "But," says Mr. Smith, I quietly slipped over to where the Ohio boys were voting, and cast my vote for Lincoln. I didn't see how he could get along without my vote. Maybe it was counted--maybe not--but I voted. TELLS OF WAR EXPERIENCES. The soldiers had lived off the country until there wasn't much left in '65, and "no foraging" orders brought bitter protests among themselves, and the boys found frequent opportunities for disobeying such orders. Mr. Smith has a fund of stories of how this was done, and says the only time he was on extra duty was for stealing a small bag of coffee from a lieutenant who had stolen it from a mess wagon. Smith turned the bag of coffee over to the cook, with the suggestion that he "strengthen up" the breakfast coffee. The lieutenant overheard him, took the coffee, and spoiled the plans for better coffee for breakfast. Smith never took a dose of medicine while in the army, never was in the hospital or the guard house, and only one time on extra duty. Sam Smith was born in Hamilton County, Indiana, in 1845.
