Hobbs, native of Tipton county, died at his home near New Lancaster, Monday morning at 1:00, death ending a long illness from kidney and bladder trouble which affected his heart. For the past several months his condition had been very serious and death was not unexpected. Mr. Hobbs spent many weeks in the Mercy hospital at Elwood under treatment, but could get no relief. With the passing of Sam Hobbs, as he was known to all his friends, the community loses one of its pioneer sons. He was born in Madison township 76 years ago being a son of John M Hobbs, one of the earliest settlers of the county who came to the New Lancaster community in 1836. His mother was Mary A. Green, a native of Maryland. When John M. Hobbs located in what is now Tipton county, his house was 14 miles from a road and his premises were surrounded by savages, but hie made friends of the Indians and never had any trouble. Samuel T. Hobbs was the youngest of four children born to John M. and Mary A. (Green) Hobbs and was reared on a farm, residing in this county until his retirement from the farm in 1917 when he removed to Elwood. He was united in marriage on March 22, 1883, to Miss Mary Ellen Myerly, daughter of George W. Myerly, former treasurer of Tipton county, and the widow and two children survive. The children are Mrs. Ida Harding, wife of Omer Harding and Jesse Hobbs, all of Elwood. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Celina C. Dellinger, widow of A.A. Dellinger, residing east of Tipton. John M. Hobbs, father of Samuel was one of the civil war, veterans of this county. Samuel received his education in the schools of Madison township and developed a business judgement and insight which made him prosperous. He was a man of genial disposition, a devout Christian and for many years one of the supports of the New Lancaster Christian church. The body will lie in state at the home near New Lancaster, on what is known as the Myerly farm, until the hour of services and friends are invited to call. The funeral will be held at the home, Wednesday morning at 10:00 with Rev. Polly Couch-Bowman and Rev. V. Hayes Miller officiating.
