Barker, 79, died on Friday, Feb. 11, 2000, at the Lincoln Hospital. He was born June 22, 1920 the son of William Barker and Leva Hackworth Barker at Falls City, Nebraska. The family moved from Falls City to Havensville, Kansas in 1926. Sam's father, William died July 10, 1928 at Havensville. His mother, Leva couldn't take care of the children, so Sam and his brother George, and his sister Lucinda, were placed in an orphanage at Atchison, Kansas. Sam spent 6 months in the orphanage, then was placed in a foster home at Oak Hill, Kansas. Sam left the orphanage at the age of 9.. He worked for his board, room and clothing until he finished grade school. He then worked at various jobs until he reached age 15. Sam then joined the Forest Service and served in Kansas and Nebraska. He received his high school diploma and electricians license by going to school while he was in the governments' employment. Sam married Velma Elizabeth Brewer November 9, 1939 in Seneca, Kansas. Seven children were born to this union. Velma died in 1983. Sam married Utah Elliott in Topeka, Kansas June 17, 1990. They moved to Sabetha, Kansas on Aug. 19, 1990 where she had a home. Sam had an auction house in Pawnee City and sold it. He owned and operated a shop and garage in Humboldt for a short time. He later worked as a mechanic and welder for Cutshall's Garage at DuBois, Nebraska; a mechanic and welder for Allis Chalmers in Pawnee City and Hopper Bro. Quarries for 22 years as a shop foreman, service man, mechanic and electrician. He retired at 60. Started a small engine repair shop working out of his home, he also did some plumbing and electric work. (Pawnee Republican, Pawnee City, NE.)
