Benton, 94, pioneer of Clay and Dickinson counties, died Thursday evening, December 8, at 8:30 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs Mary E Ewing in Lincoln, Nebr., where he had resided the past ten years. The deceased was the grandfather of Mrs. N.C. Rindsig, Mrs. D.R. Marble, G.P. Gloyd Jr., and A,E, Gloyd all of Spencer. Funeral services were held Sunday morning at 9 o'clock at the Jones Funeral home in Spencer with the Rev. B.J. Trickey, pastor of the First Congregational church in charge. Rev Trickey used the text "Thou shalt come to thy grace in a full age, Like as a shock of grain cometh in its season." Miss Miriam Evans of this city sang "Rock of Ages" and "City Four Squares." Interment was made in Riverside cemetery where Mrs Benton lays at rest. Samuel V, Benton was born at Bristol, Elkhart co., Ind., November 21 , 1838, the son of Ruby (Seely) and Edward Benton. He was united in marriage to Rebecca Ellen Blaine at Olnet, Ind., in Oct 1858. Nine children were born to them, eight of whom are living. A daughter, Mrs G.P. Gloyd of Spencer, preceded her father in death. Mr. Benton and family moved from Indiana to Iowa in 1870 and made their home on a farm near Terrill. In 1900 they moved to North Dakota where he made his home until ten years ago. Mrs Benton passed away in 1904 and was buried in Riverside Cemetery. He is survived by eight children, 47 grandchildren, 57 great grandchildren, and 8 great great grandchildren. Out of town relatives who attended the funeral were Mrs Mary Ewing, daughter & son, John R Ewing of Lincoln, Nebr., Merton Benton of Shevlin, Minn., Mr & Mrs Kenneth Roth and Mr. & Mrs Ralph Dennis of Mason City.
