He named his and Mary Etta's second daughter Elsie Ida after the old colored slave cook at the big house because she was such a great cook. He told the children stories about plantation life. When he was three his dad was training horses (that they used to ride after the foxes on fox hunts) and it reared over backwards on him and killed him. He told them about going to slave auctions with his mother and about the slaves being stripped to the waist and if they had scars on their backs (where they had been whipped), they would bring less money. I think he was a unruly boy and there was some falling out in the family because he supposedly left when he was 30 years old and no one knew anything about his whereabouts until I found him in the 1910 Sequoah County census (Sallisaw is the county seat) where he was married to Mary Etta and said he had been married eight years. He had one brother, or at least this is all he mentioned to the children, who was killed in the civil war. I dont know any of the circumstances about how this happened, but apparently he was married and had his own plantation and his slaves piled brush on him and burned his body. My wife's folks said Samuel was a full blooded irishman and after they moved to Pope County, AR, he swam the Arkansas river in January to go to a dance. Don't know what his age was but he was 66 years old when Norman, my wife's dad was born, so he was somewhere between this age and 70 yrs. They said he received a letter from the executor of the estate when his mother died and he wrote back a letter and according to one daughter told them he did not want a dam thing. I was told that Mary Etta lived in MS in the bottoms and they thought not far from the MS, river. She told them about seeing bear, about working in the fields , about raising tobacco and how they processed it ( I assume drying, making twist, etc.). and I think they said her brother Clarence drowned . My wife's dad and his sisters (he had one brother who had died before I got acquainted with them) all showed some Indian ancestery. I know Elsa always told that she was Indian and Irish, so was Mary Etta's family a lot Indian ? I know one time when the Choctaw Indian people had their yearly Pow Wow in Pushmataha County, Oklahoma me and Wynette (my wife) went to it. (we live in Paris, AR). We parked and when I got out of the car I looked around and pointed out to my wife every one of those people were walking just like her dad. So since Mary Etta came from MS, I kinda thought she must be part Choctaw. They said that Mr. White said the first time he saw Mary Etta he thought she was the prettiest woman he had ever seen. I have not been able to find a marriage record for them. I was looking for anything about Mr. White one time on the computer and I found him in a 1880 census record in Sebastian County (, Greenwood is the County Seat, just south of Ft. Smith) where he was living with a Thomas F. Berryhill family. He was 33 years old. above from Archie Clayton ANOTHER ACCOUNT Samuel White left Virginia at about 30 years of age. He told his children he was born in Virginia and lived on a plantation where his father owned many slaves (about 30). His father was also a trainer of horses used for fox hunting & died after a horse reared and fell back on him, when Sam was about 3 years old. His widowed mother never remarried but continued to run the plantation. Samuel had an older brother (name unknown) who had his own plantation during the Civil War period. He was killed in the Civil War & his slaves piled brush on his body and set it afire. Sam would tell his children stories about the slave children building fires outside and baking potatoes in the hot ashes. When the potatoes were finished baking the slave children would rake them out of the ashes with their feet (barefooted) and in the process would sometimes squash them between their toes and, of course, the children would jump around and holler because of the burning pain; everyone else thought this was pretty funny. He also told about some of the slave children coming up to the 'big house' under the pretenses of wanting to ask questions, or similiar excuses, but really only wanted to get inside the 'big house' to look at it and the furniture. Samuel never did any work as a child - the slaves did it for him Samuel told his children about going to slave auctions with his mother. When male slaves were up on the auction block they were stipped to the waist and if they had whipping scars on their backs they brought less money. Aunt Blanche remembered her grandmother, Sam's mother, traveling to Oklahoma when Blanche was a small child to visit. She could not remember her name, but recalled that visit being the only time she ever saw her grandmother White. She also recalled her father Sam receiving a letter sometime early 1900's from someone in Virginia to inform him of his inheritance (it appears he was the sole beneficiary at that time; however it appears his brother's son, or Samuel's nephew, received the bulk of the estate). According to her, Sam wrote back & said in a letter "I don't want a damn thing". (This information is according to daughters Blanche & Della via her nephew Archie.) **Samuel White's gravestone shows his middle initial as "B"; however, all other documentation indicates his middle initial was "W". Sam White Death Certificate #2150 (The top is rather dark and can't be sure but looks like it says he died in Holly Bend Township, Yell Co., AR. date of death June 11, 1926 age 80 born VA, Blanche Kennedy of Dardnell, AR, buried in Pisgah Cemetery June 12, 1926. I can not be for sure about the cause of death.
