A memorial service will be held Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. in the Western Nebraska Veterans Home Chapel with Pastor Michael Clement officiating. Interment will follow at the West Lawn Cemetery in Gering with military honors by the F.E. Warren Air Force Honor Guard. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be sent to the family at 1102 West 42nd Street to be designated later or to a charity of your choice. Samuel was born July 3, 1934 in Bridgeport, NE to Marion and Mary Wagner. He started in construction work at an early age as he worked for a period of time for his brother, James. At the age of eighteen, he took a break from construction to serve his country. He served in the United States Air Force for four years. On his first tour of duty, he was stationed at Murphy Dome in Alaska. He worked in radar and helped keep track of all aircraft in the area, both friendly and unfriendly. He continued this type of work at Norad where they tracked planes all over the United States. Sam received an honorable discharge from the Air Force in 1957. Sam married Alice Burnside May 5, 1971. They brought three children, Mark and Jandra Wagner and Stephen Burnside, to this union as a blended family. Together they built and managed a successful construction business in Colorado Springs, Colorado and later in Chadron, Nebraska. Sam owned a cabinet shop and he built beautiful cabinets and furniture. He enjoyed working with any kind of wood and seeing the finished product. Soon he became involved in building quality homes and professional buildings. Sam's work ethic was such that he did not allow kids, dogs or radios on the job site. He was a master craftsman. He designed the cabinets and furniture he built and also many of the homes he sold. Sam and Alice also bought and ran a ranch west and south of Chadron. They raised cattle and alfalfa. Sam built a beautiful ranch house which he designed and the plans were in his head. Sam also loved to garden and he raised wonderful tomatoes and other vegetables. Sam also enjoyed fishing. Sam and Alice decided to sell the ranch and travel. They bought a motor home and RV'd for 13 years or more. They enjoyed seeing the country, especially Lake Havasu, Arizona, where Sam would spend his time fishing.Sam helped build churches in various places in Arizona and Alice helped in the music departments. When Sam became a Christian, he served the Lord wherever and whenever he could. Since they moved a lot in their travels, they were privileged to serve in many churches. The high light of their travels was a trip to Israel. This trip helped them to understand the Bible better. Sam is survived by his wife, Alice; son Mark Wagner; daughter Jandra (Jan) Cooley; step son Stephen (Carol) Burnside; grandchildren Jason Wagner, Chelsea Cooley, Derek and Chad Burnside all of Colorado Springs, Colorado. He is also survived by a host of cousins, nieces and nephews and friends who miss him. Sam was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, four brothers and three sisters. Sam was the last of eight children.
