Son of Adam Walker and Martha Vance OBITUARY THE CHARITON HERALD-PATRIOT Chariton, Iowa Thursday, April 10, 1913 SAMUEL WALKER Samuel Walker was born August 1st, 1841, in Knox County, Tennessee, and departed this life April 4th, 1913, aged seventy-one years, eight months and four days, after an illness of eight months, the greater part of which time he was confined to the house and to his bed. He was afflicted with a complication of diseases and his death, though expected, came suddenly at the last. Mr. Walker came with his parents to Jefferson County, Tennessee in his early childhood where his father, Adam Walker, died when his son was but eleven years of age, leaving his wife, Martha Vance Walker, with six children, three sons and three daughters to rear, a duty which she nobly performed. All of these have passed on before. Mr. Walker was twice married, first to Miss Elizabeth A. Manley in Tennessee in 1862 and who departed this life in 1884. To this union were born nine children, all of whom grew to manhood and womanhood. Mary Elizabeth was the first to follow her mother, she being called by death in beautiful girlhood. Then followed Benjamin Theodore, Mrs. Joseph Kellenberger and John Samuel. These preceded their father into the great beyond, leaving to mourn his departure James H., at home, Mrs. Catherine Ashby, of New Market, Tenn., the only one of the children who was unable to be present at their father's funeral, Mrs. Samantha Alice Hines, Mrs. Ola Powell and Mrs. Clara Black, all of whom live in Lucas and Clarke counties. On February 14th, 1887, Mr. Walker again entered the bonds of matrimony, being united in marriage with Mrs. Elizabeth A. Pierce, who survives him. Deceased was led into the fold of our Redeemer when a young boy by his faithful mother. He united with the Presbyterian church and lived an earnest Christian life until his death. Mr. Walker enlisted in the army in the dark days of our country, serving in the Ninth Tennessee calvary for a period of twenty-seven months, when he was honorably discharged at the close of the war. He then returned to his family, remaining in Tennessee until 1876, when he emigrated to Lee county, Iowa, where they resided until 1880, when they removed to Lucas county. In 1883 he purchased a farm in Ottercreek township where he lived until his death. He served many years as Sunday school superintendent and served the church as a ruling elder ever since it's organization in 1888, at Jacksonville, Iowa. He was always interested in benevolent and charitable work, which he aided many times to his own detriment. Funeral services were were largely attended at the Jacksonville church on Sunday, April 6th, conducted by Rev. A. D. Rundell of Lucas. The remains were carried to their last resting place by loving hands, the pall bearers being his son, James H., grandson, Roy Hines, son-in-law, George Black, Rufus and Leroy Manley and William Thornton.
