Sam grew to manhood on a farm near Brooklyn and graduated from Brooklyn high school in 1908. He later took some work at Drake University. He was converted in a tabernacle meeting in 1912 and became a member of the Christian church in Brooklyn. When this church was abandoned he transferred his membership to University Christian church in Des Moines. Later he became a member of Grace Methodist church, where he had taken an active part through the years. He was a member of the official board and of the quarterly conference until his death. On March 10, 1914, he was united in marriage to Luella M. Read. Rev. F.C. Edwards of Grace Methodist church read the ceremony. One son, Kenneth Read, was born to this marriage. After a year in Brooklyn they moved to a farm near town. They continued to live on the farm until 1942 when they came back to Brooklyn and maintained their home until the present time. Sam was a member of the Knights of Pythias lodge for nearly 41 years. He served in several offices in the local lodge and in 1931-32 was selected Grand Prelate of Iowa. He was preceded in death by his infant son, Kenneth, his parents and a half-brother who died in infancy. Surviving relatives include his widow, Luella, a half-sister, Mrs. walter Rhinehart, six nephews, two nieces, many other relatives and a host of friends. In recent years Sam worked as an auctioneer and dealer in real estate and insurance. His ready wit and kindly interest in people won for him a circle of friends whom no man would be able to number.
