Description	:	Samuel Winchester and his brother Timothy, operated a flouring mill at Milan. Samuel became obsessed with balloon flying, and in September of 1855 made an ascension from the Square of Milan. He at first traveled over Monroeville and then turned eastward, eventually landing in a tree at Hudson. Neither Sam nor the balloon suffered much damage. For his second flight he decided to leave from Norwalk, and on Oct. 2, his apparatus was in place on West Water Street just west of Benedict Avenue. For his second flight he decided to leave from Norwalk, and on Oct. 2, his apparatus was in place on West Water Street just west of Benedict Avenue. A cannon was fired at the top of the hill near the courthouse, and Sam lifted off his balloon which was filled with hydrogen. Eye witnesses said the hydrogen was obtained from the disintegration of water. The wind carried him northeast over Berlinville, at which place was the last definite sighting of Sam Winchester. This was the beginning of the legend and stories of The Mad Miller of Milan. A few days later, a Cincinnati newspaper reported the sighting of balloon wreckage passing over the city, and there were reports of Sam having been seen in Canada, but the most accepted theory was that he perished in Lake Erie. It is interesting to note that the Winchester family never erected a memorial monument in the cemetery for him, nor was an estate ever probated in Erie County.
