Sanford Lewis Goddard, 65, a pioneer railroad conductor who had lived in Billings for the last 20 years died at 3 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the Northern Pacific hospital at Glendive. Cancer was the cause of his death. Mr. Goddard had been confined to the hospital since September 1. He entered the Northern Pacific service at the age of 19 at Livingston and with the exception of a few years in the late nineties had served continuously. He made his first trip into Billings in 1888. The veteran conductor was born in St. John, N.B,. November 26, 1868. He moved with his family to Goodwin, S.D., where he resided until he was 19 years old, when he first came to Montana. He started with the railroad as a fireman. He was married to Miss Fanny Russel of Glasgow at Williston, N.D., on January 11, 1896. After living at Glasgow for a short while and later moving to Livingston, they located to Billings in 1914. Mr. Goddard was a charter member of the I.O.O.F. having joined the organization 42 years ago at Livingston. He was a member of the Order of Railway Conductors for 38 years and a member of the Royal Highlanders and the Brotherhood of American Yeomen for 25 years. He is survived by his widow and six children, a sister and four brothers. The children are Joseph Goddard and Mrs. Jack Partington of Billings; Verne C. Goddard of Glendive; Mrs. J.R. Kelly and Mrs. Harry I. Zeimer of Minneapolis and Miss Edith Goddard of Chicago; a sister, Mrs. George Hocum of Minneapolis; four brothers, William Goddard of Minneapolis, A.C. Goddard of Redby, Minnesota, Stowell Goddard of Goodwin, South Dakota and Ansley Goddard of Ione, Michigan; four grandchildren, Jack and Jimmy Kelly, Barbara Lee Zeimer and Billy Partington.
