Description	:	Sara Henry Sharpton was born on March 14, 1929 in Abbeville, South Carolina to William C. and Margaret Louise (Smith) Sharpton. She was their youngest of their six children. She was born in the beginning of the great depression and like most of her generation, she did not have anything in excess but love. Read More	Sara Henry Sharpton was born on March 14, 1929 in Abbeville, South Carolina to William C. and Margaret Louise (Smith) Sharpton. She was their youngest of their six children. She was born in the beginning of the great depression and like most of her generation, she did not have anything in excess but love. She was educated in the Abbeville school system until dropping out of high school to go to work. On September 6, 1946 she married Milton Henry Fowler also of Abbeville. Together they had three children, William Edward, Alma Elaine and Marsha Louise. In 1956, they moved to Bear, Delaware where Milton was working as an IBEW electrician at the refinery being constructed in Delaware City. After two and a half years the job was nearing completion and the family moved to a Pittsburgh, PA suburb, Monroeville. They resided here for two and a half years while Milton did electrical work in the Steel Mills. Then the family moved back to the Stanton, DE, area for two years. Then to Laurel, DE, where they were constructing an addition to the Nylon Plant in Seaford. While living here, Sara went back to school and completed her GED thru the James Grove School. They stayed here for four years. With the oldest two children completed high school, they moved back to the Bear, DE area, eventually buying a new home in a neighborhood called Varlano. Sara had been a stay at home mom up until this time. She took employment at the Avon Plant in Newark for a short time and eventually went to work at the Sears Merchandise Center (a warehouse that shipped clothing regionally) located between Stanton and Newport, DE. In February of 1980, just before her 51st birthday, Milton died of a heart attack. Sara married Roy Robert Arters on August 28, 1985. They were married in Elkton, MD. With this marriage, she gained two new sons, Roy and Gary Arters. Sara took an early retirement from Sears and they moved to Greenwood, SC. They lived in Greenwood for a couple of years and Roy became sick. They moved back to the Bear, DE area and Roy died in November of 1989 of cancer. Sara lived in the Bear area just off of Smalley’s Dam Road and enjoyed the retired life. She had a close group of friends and a church family (Red Lion Evangelical Church) that provided the fellowship and support she needed in these years she faced without a partner. With a changing neighborhood and advancing age, Sara moved into Chelten Apartments, a complex for seniors, located in the Wilton section of New Castle, DE. Chelten was a wonderful experience for Sara as she had the privacy of her own apartment when she wanted it, and the social interactions she needed when that was what she wanted. Sara made many wonderful friends here and enjoyed her time immensely. But her health started to decline and it was decided that she no longer should live alone. She moved to Florida and lived with her daughter Elaine in Kissimmee, FL for about five years. Sara found a new church home and had everything she could want or need but she became homesick for Delaware and longed to return to be near her longtime friends. She informed her children she wanted to return to Delaware to live in an Assisted Living Facility. She moved to Dover, DE into the State Street Assisted Living Facility, where she was near her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was as independent as she could be, but continued to deal with declining health. She didn’t have the same desires to be as social as she had been her entire life. She loved playing Bingo and getting visits from family and friends. In addition to her parents and her two husbands, Sara was preceded in death by her great-grandson, Zachary Ryan Fowler, her brother, William C. Sharpton, Jr., her sisters, Evelyn Norris, and Edith Parnell, her half-sisters Myrtis Wilkins and Louise Lee, half-brother William C. Burch, as well as many in-laws. She is survived by her two sisters, Mildred Byars and Dorothy Harmon; son Bill Fowler, Sr. (Wanda); daughtersElaine Carlus (Charles), and Marty Monaghan (Joseph); step-sons Roy Arters (Ann) and Gary Arters; Grandchildren Bill Fowler, Jr (Roxanne); Stephen Fowler (Beth); Rob Fowler (Shannon); Kim Hazzard (Mark); Wendy Escalante (Alberto); Betsy Chaney (Josh); Keith Monoghan; Patrick Monaghan (Melissa); Terry Willey (Edwin); Jamie Arters; Michael Malkin; and Amy Malkin. 15 Great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. Sara had a great sense of humor and was often the center of attention when there was a gathering, regaling people with her stories told with her southern drawl. She would tell people “My kids say I’m a southern belle, a real ding-a-ling.” When teased, her favorite expression was “Kiss Ole Toe”. She loved to work jig saw and crossword puzzles. Read her devotions daily and played games on her computer. She loved to read anything written by Debbie McComber, was a big fan of “Gone With the Wind” and loved anything Conway Twitty sang. She enjoyed watching “Jeopardy”, “Wheel of Fortune”, and The Gaither Gospel Concerts. She was a fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates since 1960 when she almost knocked herself unconscious as she lept up in excitement and struck her head when Bill Mazeroski hit a walk off homerun to win the World Series. She was a good cook, specializing in the dishes she grew up with in South Carolina. She was particularly noted for her 5 flavored pound cake. She was a very loving woman who cared deeply for every member of her extended family. She was a loyal friend to those with whom she bonded, and corresponded with many of these friends for years after life separated them. Every time she ended up in a new community as she journeyed thru life, the first two things she did was meet and befriend her neighbors and find a church where she could worship.
