Description	:	My Thoughts and Memories of my Mother Sara Miller Pethel was born on Saturday, September 22, 1923 at 1:30 o'clock PM. She weighed in at 8 1/2 pounds and was 20 inches long. Read More	My Thoughts and Memories of my Mother Sara Miller Pethel was born on Saturday, September 22, 1923 at 1:30 o'clock PM. She weighed in at 8 1/2 pounds and was 20 inches long. Her doctor was Dr. F.B. Spencer and nurse was Mrs. Thelma Johnson. Mother was an only child, growing up with working parents. She was very much a tom boy when she was young, falling and breaking her arms five times, two of which were within weeks of each other. Mother attended grammar school and junior high school in Salisbury, NC, spending one year in Mooresville, NC, living with Granny Shoaf and Aunt Polly and attended one school year there.The summer before starting high school, my grandparents moved to Greenville, SC. They lived in an upstairs apartment on Park Ave before purchasing their home on Croft Street. Mother graduated from Greenville High School in the spring of 1940 and in the fall started her classes at Furman University. She attended Furman for two years, before marriage. After I was born, my parents bought a house in Camden and we lived there until my Father received his orders to report to a base in Texas, at which time we moved in with my Grandparents on Croft Street in Greenville. When my brother Ricky was about 6 months old we boarded a train and headed for Texas to live on the base and be with our father. When the war ended we returned to Greenville and lived with my grandparents(Pethels) until our house was built at 239 East Avondale, Greenville, S.C. It was a small two bedroom, one bath home. In 1952 the home was added on with a master bedroom, master bath, new kitchen and den, a screen porch and swimming pool. Mother loved animals, and I never remember our home not having several dogs or cats. Her favorites, you could not name, she loved them all whether they were purebred or mutts, it made no difference to her. When Mother passed away, she had two Maine Coon cats and two Schnauzer dogs. My brother Steve, and I inherited this love of animals from our parents. Steve took the two Schnauzers after Mother's death and the Maine Coons went to a couple who worked for the breeder Mother got the cats from. I wanted to keep the cats but with four of my own, my husband threatened to divorce me if we brought any more cats into the house. Of course he was right, 6 cats would have been too many. When I was a young girl, Mother would have her lady friends over about once a month for a lunch bridge game, and my would they have a fun time, gossiping about lord only knows what and laughing about everything. They had such a good time together and stayed friends until the end. Of Mother's talents, her best was her beautiful needlepoint work. I have four chairs with her needlepoint on the seats. She loved doing it so much, that she would offer to help friends and the church with their needs. There is much of her needlepoint displayed at Christ Episcopal Church in Greenville. Mother was an avid reader, reading as many as thirty books in a month. She loved working the crossword puzzles in the paper and one didn't dare do it first. When Mother died there were hundreds upon hundreds of books in the house. Mother loved to entertain, go to parties and loved to dress up and go out dancing. She and my father would go out just about every weekend and in those days, they always left in their finest attire, Mother with her dressy cocktail dress and Daddy in his suit. Mother enjoyed going to the Greenville Little Theater and to concerts. Most of all, Mother loved to shop, and probably had the largest collection of clothes, shoes, and linens of anyone I have ever known. Her house was stockpiled with groceries, especially dry goods, etc. Guess this stems from her life during World War II when things were rationed. It seems that she never wanted to run out of anything. After Mother and Daddy divorced, Mother married Charles Robinson( an old beau from her high school days) and they lived on Seminole St. in Greenville. They seemed to enjoy each others company and always did their grocery shopping together, would stop by the Farmers Market on Saturday morning in the summer and buy a bushel of something, then come home and get it ready for the freezer. Mother worked for Southern Bank and Trust and worked her way up to becoming a Branch Manager. Eventually SB&T was sold to First Union, and after about a year with First Union, Mother retired. After Charles's death, Mother spent every Christmas at our house, and Mother and I would get up the day after Christmas and hit the Hallmark stores, for bargains, especially the miniature ornaments. Mother and I both had started a collection of the little miniatures and now I have both collections. When Mother came to visit, she would bring both dogs and cats, and we already had 4 cats and a dog, so it was a pretty wild place for the entire visit, but unbelievable, they all got along together and we never had any bad scenes. When Jim and I would visit Mother in Greenville, Mother and I would sit up until 2:00 or 3:00 in the wee hours of the morning catching up on all the news. Every year at Christmas time, I start really thinking about Mother, missing her as much this year as I did the year she died. There is something about losing your mother, you just never get over it and always will wish they were here. Birthdays and holidays are especially hard and I try to think of the good times we have and not dwell on the fact she is no longer with us. Even today when something happens in my life I feel like I need to pick up the phone and call Mother and I will probably have these urges for the rest of my life. Obituary for Sara Miller Pethel Robinson: Sara Pethel Robinson, 73, of 16 Seminole Drive, died Sunday. Born in Salisbury, N. C., she was a daughter of the late Alva Devon and Merle Shoaf Pethel. She was branch manager and vice president at Southern Bank & Trust for many years and was a communicant of Christ Church, Episcopal. Surviving are a daughter, Brady Wooten Kerr of Flowery Branch, Ga.; a stepdaughter, Kathryn R. Stephenson of Greenville; two sons, Stephen E. Wooten of Columbia and Richard D. Wooten, Jr. of Greenville; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Omit flowers. Memorials may be made to Hospice of St. Francis Hospital, 414-A Pettigru St., Greenville, S. C. 29601. Graveside services: 2 p.m. Tuesday in Christ Church Yard with Dr. Robert S. Donnals and the Rev. Robert E. Long officiating. Visitation: 7 to 8:30 p.m. tonight at The Mackey Mortuary, Century Drive.
