Description	:	Sara Sonora "Sis" Newell Sallee, 90, of Eddyville, died Monday, Oct. 4, 2010, at her home. She was born in Eddyville to Frank and Beryl "Babe"(Emanuel)Watkins. She was raised by Billy and Happy Gordon with three cousins and one brother. Sis was a graduate of Eddyville High School, and received her normal training from William Penn College. Read More	Sara Sonora "Sis" Newell Sallee, 90, of Eddyville, died Monday, Oct. 4, 2010, at her home. She was born in Eddyville to Frank and Beryl "Babe"(Emanuel)Watkins. She was raised by Billy and Happy Gordon with three cousins and one brother. Sis was a graduate of Eddyville High School, and received her normal training from William Penn College. She taught rural school around the Eddyville area. She married Clayton Newell Dec. 6, 1945. Sis and Clayton owned and operated the Newell's Elevator in Eddyville for 35 years, and later she worked at the Eddyville Market. Sis and Clayton were blessed with 42 years of marriage before Clayton died on June 30, 1987. Sis later married Wally Sallee in 1996. He died in 2001. Sis was very active all her life. She was a member of the Garden Club, Ladies Aid, Women's Club, American Legion Auxiliary, the Ottumwa Hospital Auxiliary and volunteered with the Eddyville Elementary School. Sis was a member ot the First Christian Church, at which she was a Sunday school teacher, superintendant, financial secretary, deacon and elder. She was also very active in community projects. She is survived by son Burl(Deb)Newell; two grandchildren, Jonita(Todd)Boyer and Josie(Donovan)Young; and seven great-grandchildren, Dakota, Dimitri, Harlie, and Haegen Boyer, Clayton, Skyler, and Rawling Young, all of Eddyville. She is preceded in death by her parents; Billy and Happy Gordon; one brother, Gordon Watkins; and special sisters, Poly Denning, Blanche "Petty" Carr and LaVerne Steele. A memorial service will be at 10:30am Thursday, Oct. 7, at the First Christian Church in Eddyville with Rev. Dennis Durst officiating. Burial will follow services at Highland Cemetery in Eddyville Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 11an Wednesday at the Eddyville Funeral Chapel. The family will be present Wednesday evening from 6-8pm In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established to the First Christian Church.
